Fighter jets escort plane to Detroit.....

A NWA plane, flight #191, has been escorted to Detroit from Reagan International airport by two fighter jets because of a security risk. Apparently, a passenger looking through a magazine found a note containing a bomb threat. The plane has landed in Detroit and has been evacuated safely. They have brought in x-ray machines to evaluate the note and are thoroughly searching the plane. I believe the plane left Reagan around 10:00 a.m. this morning.

Why isn't there anything about this on any of the major network or newspaper websites?

I don't know, but it is all over the Detroit radio and television stations. Even have reporters out at Selfridge because they think that is where the fighter jets were sent out of. All kinds of rescue workers waiting it out at Detroit Metro airport.

It's on the AP wires, Dan. Don't think it was such a big deal, this stuff has been going on recently, there was another one a day or two ago to LA, same thing. I hope the people doing this stuff who think it's so funny get charged with felonies appropriately, if that's the penalty. Terrorists don't live anonymous bomb threats inside online magazines without showing them to anyone, the whole point of a bomb threat is to get something in return (used to be hijackers wanted someone released or to fly the plane somewhere they wanted). Why the attempt to generate hysteria, Laura -- you knew perfectly well you were doing that with your headline. Too much of this hysteria hype on this board, you guys seem to be getting a thrill out of it.

Joe (why are you using an alias?) --what headline would you have used? Generate hysteria? Reread my headline and my post...no attempt there at all. I live in Detroit, this is BIG news here and I imagine it would be big news to people who might have someone on that plane.

You are a creep.

This is incident is akin to the American Airlines plane that landed at Dulles several nights ago ... someone found a threatening note onboard. It's not clear why she posted the original message alerting to the Detroit incident ... something probably better left to the media folks and their regular outlets. Maybe Laura is practicing writing headlines. Ciao

Laura, Joe is absolutely right. This kind of thing has happened before and most of us do listen to the news during the day. As to what kind of headline I personally would use-I wouldn't even bother posting it here. All it does is add to everyone's feeling of unease and anxiety. CNN and FOX do enough of that already. (Are you trying to get a job with them? You would fit right in.)

That's National Airport. Not Reagan International.

Jim, you're wrong. It was Reagan National airport. I, for one, was very interested to see this report. I find it very reassuring after what happened on September 11 to know that the government is on top of what is happening in the air. Incidents like this have helped me to realize that flying today is certainly a lot safer than it was before the terrorist attack. I think what happened in Detroit and in Los Angeles a day or two before is a very big deal, and we should all be aware of it, especially here on our travel boards.
