Is there an auto Ferry from Portland, Maine to Bar Harbor?

Also, can someone please recommend a clean place to stay in Bar Harbor for approx $150 or less per night during the middle of July?

Nope, don't think there's a ferry.

I think "dated" is the norm in Maine...not that that's a bad thing! Things get replaced when they break, not cause they are not the latest thing-a laudable New England trait...

Perhaps somebody else has stayed at Cadillac Motoe Inn recently enought to help you-it was fine when we were there, and I see it recommened on occasion.

Are you determined to go to motels or would a nice B&B do? You should be able to find something in that range.

Would LOVE to spend 1 or 2 nights at an affordable B&B - but all I'm finding on the internet are really nice places, but in the $225-$275 range per night. (many have a two night min. stay.)

Out of our price range for sure.

We now have revised our plans and will probably stay a total of 12 nights in Northern Mass.-South and Mid coast Maine up to Acadia NP, and back home to Ontario through Vermont.

There are 4 of us (retired) and we need two rooms every night.
We will break the bank if we stay 12 nights at $300 per couple(including Tax)a night.

I'm hoping some forum members will recommend affordable B&B's in the $150 range that are very clean and nice. Especially near Acadia NP.

There seems to be a wide disparity between the high priced rooms and the not-so-nice motels that probably haven't spent a dime in upgrades for 40 years but still want to charge $160 a night. This is what I meant when I used the word "dated" in my earlier post - I didn't want to offend anyone.

I'm finding it very hard to find a middle ground unless you go back to the Interstate highway where good deals are plentiful.

What you describe is perfectly correct, not only in New England but in upstate New York as well.

It is hard to spend money on upgrading facilities when your season is a bare two months and people do not want to pay more than $150.

Even with their higher prices and two day minimums, the failure rate for B&B's and small inns (and the marriages of those who run them) is enormous.
