Female Visiting Seattle alone..
I am visiting Seattle for Business and need to know if it is safe to roam the streets at night by myself? I will be staying at the Pacific Plaza and want to fit as much in as possible. My stay is from a Weds. noon til Sat noon.My busniess is over at 4:00 on Thurs & Fri. Any suggestions? Again I am worried about being safe downtown by myself.

Hi Cheryl
I just stayed at the Pacific Plaza over the long weekend and I was not impressed. First off it is not in a very nice area of town, when I pulled up to the front door there were some men hanging around with who I did not feel comfortable getting out of my car and there is no valet service. I found the room to be small, the bed was hard and uncomfortable, the heating unit kept making noises all day and night, and the outside traffic noise came through quite loud into the room. This may sound like I am nitpicking but I expected a little more based on the photos on their website.
The parking is also fairly expensive at $13.00 a day and you have to park in a public lot 2 blocks away.
If you have any more questions feel free to email me.
good luck

I would not recomend the Pacific Plaza as a place to stay. I prefer the Hotel Monaco or the Vintage Plaza if I am alone. Both of the above have a free wine hour which gives the guests an opportunity to taste Washington wines. They also have excellent restaurants. I would not wander around too much by yourself in the evening. You must go to Pike Place market and it is perfectly safe to walk there any time during the day. There are wonderful restaurants if you are interested. The Seattle Art Museum is on First Avenue which you can also walk to and there is incredible shopping in the Nordstroms mother store and in an upscale mall downtown.

Hi Cheryl, we have lived in Seattle area for 30 years. I'm not familiar with the above mentioned hotels, but suggest that you go with the above recommendations about not staying at that particular hotel. We usually recommend the Edgewater which is down on the waterfront, but that too would not be the best area to be wandering around at night. Seattle is just like all other big cities our size - we have safe areas, but there are areas to avoid too, especially at night. Lots of night life but again, often in areas like Pioneer Square, that I wouldn't advice a lone female to walk around in. Downtown is great daytimes, lots of shopping. Be sure to see Pike's Market Place, the waterfront, and even though it's touristy, you can't beat the view from the top of the Space Needle. Hope this helps. Feel free to email for more info.

Cheryl, I cordially disagree with the other responses you've had. The Pacific Plaza is fine for the money--it's one of the few bargains left in downtown Seattle. So long as you're not expecting the Ritz...
Like any urban area, there are lots of street people in Seattle. If you are comfortable in urban settings, you'll be fine in Seattle. I used to work at the Four Seasons (a block from the Pacific Plaza) and would regularly walk to my car at 1 or 2 in the morning (of course, I used to live in NYC so Seattle seems tame!). Just be aware of your surroundings, walk confidently--you know the drill!

Thank you all for your advice... I went to Seattle and did stay at the pacific Plaza... I found it to be quite charming. A very good deal for the money. I was not expecting major sevice like some of the well known, bigger names that I had stayed at in other cities. I was in a king suite which was about $125 a night. The room was nice size , the bathroom was small, but not as small as a LARGE bath in NYC. I felt comfortable walking around in the daytime and it did not get dark until around 8:15. It was a great trip. Thanks again

Hi,
I read all of the responses to Cherly about the Pacific Plaza in Seattle. I have booked a room at the Hotel Monaco and the West Coast Vance for 6/99. Being that the Hotel Monaco seems to be next door to the Pacific Plaza and after reading all the comments on the area, I am not sure Hotel Monaco is okay. Can you tell me which hotel is best - Monaco or West Coast Vance? I must make a decision, please help. Thank you.

Hi Cheryl,
I disagree about the people on the earlier posts who said downtown Seattle and the northern sections are generally unsafe at night and in an undesirable area. These areas are not nearly as crime-ridden and violent as they say. Toward the southern area of downtown, and basically anywhere south of downtown, however, you can find a few drunkards, people who sell drugs, and other such unfriendly people. However, north of Pioneer Square, it is fairly safe. And don''t believe this ridiculous weak female stereotype. The men are in just as much danger as the women, and all you need to know are some basic self-defense moves and know how to scream loud if some leery people creep you out. Get some mace. But generally, downtown Seattle is fairly safe at night in the CBD, shopping district, Belltown, and northern neighbourhoods. Seattle isn''t as violent as other cities like NY, Chicago, and LA, but do be on your guard, and don''t feel that you can''t pull off some clever self-defense techniques because you''re a woman. That''s ridiculous. And the area around the waterfront and the Edgewater is NOT high crime. The criminals tend to stay in the dark alleys and street corners of Pioneer Square and thereabouts.
