Favorite Restaurants in Miami
Traveling to Miami on business this week. Having never been there, I thought I might ask all you Fodorites for restaurant suggestions in the area. Hotel and office are near the Miami International Airport. Not interested in night club type atmosphere, just great food and a casual atmosphere.

Will you have a car? Most of the areas near the airport aren't known for their cuisine. And, it would make a big difference if it was north, west, or south of the airport. If you have a car, you open up to a world of possibilities. Besides, Miami Restaurant Month is going on now - www.miamirestaurantmonth.com so you can try some of the best establishments for a great price (Norman's, Red Fish Grill, Pascal's). In Coral Gables, there are quite a few places with good food and a good atmosphere - Max's Grille, City Cellars, Tarpon Bend.

Don't know the name, but you could call the AmeriSuites to ask. I got the airport AmeriSuites on a Priceline bid and ate at a little strip center next to the hotel. There were several different ethnic restaurants there and the food was delicious. Sure meets your criteria "just great food and a casual atmosphere".

Yes, I will have a car. The location is south of the airport. I am willing to drive to find a good place to eat however would want to avoid any bad areas of town or routes that would be difficult to find my way as I will be relying on mapquest or a good map with directions to get there.

South of the airport you shouldn't have any problems with bad areas of town unless you are very, very lost. Probably most directly, you can reach Coral Gables. The restaurants I mentioned in Coral Gables would fit your requirements very well. Even closer than Coral Gables, a casual, local place called Duffy's Tavern on SW 57th Avenue is a popular sports bar with good food. Not too far, and a direct route, is Versailles on SW 8th Street, probably the most typical Cuban restaurant. Great food. Across the street also on 8th Street, is Hy Vong, an excellent Vietnamese restaurant - as casual as possible, highly praised food.
Highway connections south of the airport are pretty convenient, but the Beach is farther away. I would recommend taking a look at that website I mentioned as it provides info on restaurants, including web pages and addresses. The descriptions of restaurants can also give you an idea of other places to eat.

Try Duo in the Brickell area of downtown Miami, easy to access and park. Duo is Absolutely delightful... just the thought of Duo brings a smile to my face and I cannot wait until my next visit. The combination of the delicious food, attentive service, and soothing ambiance makes for an incomparable dining experience, with local ingredients and elevated presentations and cooking techniques.
