Try www.phantomgourmet.com, or better yet www.bostonphoenix.com. It depends what you are looking for, ambiance, price, etc.

We were just there Saturday night. We were advised by our local friends that, unless we had a specific place or dish we wanted, to just walk around and find a place with menu items we liked no line. That advice worked for us. We ended up at Il Villagio on Hanover. Very good, limited menu, lovely light red sauce, very fresh tasting and great service. Walked down the street to Mike's Pastry for excellent cannoli.

The last time I was in the North End we tried Asiago's on Prince Street (I think). I enjoyed it more than other places I've tried--it was smaller and quieter and the meal was fantastic. Had the scallop salad which was wonderful.

We visit Boston every Patriots Day weekend and generally wander around the North End until we find a place that interests us and/or isn't too crowded. We have never had a negative dining experience anywhere! Having said that, I'll second the recommendation for Assagio. Excellent food, nice atmosphere.

I actually live in the North End, and I have to say that Cantina Italiana on Hanover is absolutely the best. Have been there again and again with guests, and everything has been divine. The basement of Assagio is a fabulous atmosphere, but I find there portions to be small and the food not nearly as good as some other North End Restaurants. Pomodoro is pretty cute and delicious as well.

Wish I could remember the name of the place I ate in June 2002 in the North End. We waited for an hour on a Saturday night, but it was worth it! All I recall is that it was off the main path and many of the people patronizing the restaurant were speaking italian to each other. Gotta be a good sign!
I think the advice I heard was, stay off the main drag. This place was down a side-street.

While admittedly my experience in the North End is limited, we had a wonderful dinner at a Sardinian restaurant called Maurizio's, 364 Hanover Street. It's a small place, and definitely not on the tourist radar screen, but the food was excellent. It's not your typical Italian-American fare, but worth an adventure.
