Have you looked at some of the suggested hotel websites? More and more, they will show you pretty extensive pictures of both rooms and public spaces which might give you an appropriate "turn on" for one of them.

Though it gets panned in here a lot, I really enjoy the Grand Hyatt...probably because I practically lived there for a year and a half.
The rooms were large and comfortable, the staff was first rate, especially the concierge on the club level. When my family was in town, having the club level amenities was especially helpful.

Vittoria,

Sounds you mention big & traditional, I would suggest the Essex House (Westin) on Central Park South. That said, you don't want a standard room there, but a parkview deluxe (maybe even in the St. Regis club section) would be great.

Otherwise, the Michelangelo is probably a good idea and obviously there's the Plaza, although I personally have never stayed there - the lobby is always an absolute mob scene.

Hope this helps,
Andre

Thanks everyone for the great suggestions. I am presently looking at some of the hotels on the trip advisory site. This is a great site.
When I finally narrow it done I will probably ask for a good authentic and fun Italian reataurant close by........
