We went to Alcatraz on the evening tour. I don't think it really matters which tour you take. I didn't think the evening added much to the experience. For restaurants we loved Ella's and the Slanted Door (make reservations now because the food is just amazing). We spent a week in SF last year. My trip report is under my name. Have a great time!

Try to get Beach Blanket Babylon tix for Sunday matinee... Its a great and funny show thats been playing for decades.... my teens loved it...
Also consider your Alcatraz trip as a part of the Grayline half- or full-day tour... Its nice to see dozens of SF attractions without having to drive and park... plus you get guaranteed Alcatraz tix... use your AAA discount too... have fun

If you stay in Burlingame, you will spend time and money traveling to/from SF. More importantly IMHO, you'll miss a lot of SF ambience.
If you're looking for budget lodging, go to www.biddingfortravel.com and learn the Priceline bidding process. Also, type "Priceline San Francisco" (without the quotes into the search box at the top of the page to read the archived posts on this subject.

Hi Dean, if you are going to be taking the Alcatraz tour Sept. 25th or after I just wanted to let you know that the SF Chronical announced today that as of Sept. 25th Hornblowers will be operating the Alcatraz Tours rather than the Blue & Gold. The boats will be out of Pier 31 1/2 rather than Pier 41. Wishing you and your family a wonderful time in SF!
