family vacation in NH
We are planning a trip mid July early August 2001. We're a family of 4 (children are 7 and 9) I'd like to know if anyone knows of an all inclusive resort, (food and lodging)in either VT. or NH, where we'd be able to hike, canoe or do nothing at all. A place with a kids camp would be good!

Laura,
You might want to look into The Basin Harbor in Vergennes, VT. A web search should find their site. It's right on Lake Champlain, small cottages with living room, kitchen and bedroom, meals are taken at the main lodge. There were canoes, kyaks, swimming pool, golf etc. We were there off season in Sept. and enjoyed it. Not sure how close the hiking would be - we brought our bikes and had a great time cycling - lovely scenery with the lake, the valley with farms and the Green Mts. in the background.

You should check out the Tyler Place in Vermont. Its right on Lake Champlain, just south of the Canadian border. Children spend the mornings at the excellent kids' program, the afternoons with their families, and then back to the kids'program in the evening. You can canoe, kayak, sail or swim (including an indoor pool), bike, or just hang around and read. You can also spend an afternoon travelling through the countryside of French Canada, which will give your kids a taste of international travel. The Tyler Place's kids program is considered to be one of the best in the country.

Try the Balsams resort in Dixville Notch, NH. Beautiful, charming "old school" type of resort - I've only been in the winter, but then it is very kid-friendly with tons of activities for little people and plenty of stuff for Mom and Dad, too. www.thebalsams.com

We have stayed at the Mt. Washington Hotel in Bretton Woods NH. The hotel has recently been renovated so its in beautiful shape. You cannot beat the view of Mt. Washington from the huge porch. There's horseback riding, golfing, tennis, swimming (indoor and outdoor pools), fishing and hiking on site as well as planned activities for the kids. The meals are elegant in a big oldfashioned dining room with a small band playing. I'll never forget the sight of my girls dancing with their Dad. While the hotel has a formal feel to it, its so full of kids that everyone would feel comfortable. We love it.
