Family reunion in Las Vegas--need help choosing a hotel!

Need help planning a multi-generational family reunion for next July. Precise dates still flexible. Las Vegas was the destination requested at last reunion.

We need a family-friendly hotel with a good (great, if possible!) pool that's still "affordable" ($200/night max). We'll have kids 5-10, young teens, twenty- and thirty-somethings and up to 60's boomers. Some will go to shows, possibly gamble, etc. while others will mostly want to hang out together at a pool.

Is there a water park or wave pool available in the area that doesn't require residence in a particular hotel?

Help, please!

You are going to have a hard time at that price point for a group booking. Vegas hotels have gotten very expensive and the reasonable room rates are usually for last minute bookings.

I'd call the Las Vegas CVB and ask for group sales. They will get particulars on your group and send out RFPs to the hotels then the hotels will reply directly to you.

As far as family friendly, I'd stay away from The Hard Rock and The Palms.

if you want to stay on the strip - i'd go with the flamingo or bally's - centrally located and good pool area.

Also, off strip properties such as the Orleans and Gold Coast can be a good value. The Orleans has a bowling center and multi screen movie complex. Both have banquet facilities for large groups and good buffets. FYI, you will have better room prices usually Sun - Thurs than on Fri & Sat nights.

You can get great rates in Las Vegas in the summer. Just as an example, the Mandalay Bay (which has a great pool area) has a special running right now for $109/night. All the articles I read say that Vegas is hurting right now. You might be able to lock in some good rates for next summer.

The Flamingo (very reasonably priced) and Mirage also have good pools and are centrally located.
Here is a list detailing the Vegas hotel pools: www.vegas.com/resorts/pools/

The Mandalay Bay, Luxor and Excalibur are at the far end of the strip and connected by their own monorail (not the broader Vegas monorail). Excalibur has a kid-friendly midway with carnival games.

There was a water park in Vegas "wet'n'wild" closed now.

Flamingo and Tropicana are cheaper hotels/casinos, and they have good pools, especially Flamingo, and it's in the middle of the strip.

Tropicana is not bad, but location is practically on the edge of the strip. Safe, just not very convenient.

I second the Luxor; great prices, great pool complex, and a whole floor devoted to the stuff kids like (including food court and electronic arcade, movies, etc.). It also has walkways (and tram) to Shark Reef at Mandalay Bay and on the other side, Excalibur.

I have my dad booked at the Desert Rose for a trade show:

http://www.shellhospitality.com/hotels/desert_rose/

It looks like a decent pool, and very close to the strip. The best part is they are all one and two bedroom condos with kitchens and the prices are great! It sounds like they just remodeled. Tripadvisor says it is great for kids. I think they include breakfast too.

We love downtown with a group of people. I had a suprise 50th b-day
party for my boyfriend a few years
back, approx 20 people from different parts of the US. MUCH easier to find people if they want to wander off to a different casino for a few hours. Had nice birthday dinner at the end of the week at
Binions Steak House. Had LOTS of
other restaurants I looked at, menus, prices, etc, but considering
getting everybody there, alcohol consumption (for those that had rental cars ) etc., downtown was the way to go for us. Pool is great at Golden Nugget now with the shark tank in the middle and the slide the kids (and adults )will have fun using. Little crowded at that pool, but still nice there.
ALl the conveniences we needed worked out best for us downtown. Now a certain group of us continue to go each year, same time , and
we all know where to find the others at 'their' favorite hangout, whether it be Main St Station, shrimp ccktails at Golden Gate, etc.
Make it a great gathering wherever
you decide

It is wise to enquire about some of the hotel pools as the Luxor closes promptly at 5 or 6PM as most of them do, and with children it would be good if you got a hotel with a pool that opens later.

Try getting group rates at Signature at MGM - Grand.

Reviews are good and one review said their room rate was $149 through VRBO.com. Not sure what that is but you could check it out.

The Signature is rated #3 in LV by tripadvisor. They have several pools and a lazy river.

Thank you SO much for all your suggestions. On my own, I would never have thought of contacting the CVB, GoTravel. Thanks for the tip about mid-week price reductions, tripinpj.

I'm beginning to think that, with nearly a dozen kiddies in the group, perhaps we should think about something clean, safe and family-friendly off-strip for at least a couple of the days. Kelliebellie, I'd be interested to hear what your Dad thinks of the Desert Rose.

The Tropicana prices look great but, on its website, it seems to be almost more casino than hotel--which could be a challenge with all the youngsters involved in our reunions.

Dad won't be there until October, but I'll let you know. It sounds really nice because it doesn't have a casino in it, but it is right off the strip for those that do want a casino. Another plus was that the mono-rail is right across the street, like a 5 minute walk.

http://www.lvmonorail.com/

Hooters is number 5 on the map, and I believe the Desert Rose is right next door.

Another place to consider is the Green Valley Ranch. It would be great for kids, but it very far from the strip. Like $30 cab ride far. But if you have people renting cars it wouldn't be bad.

http://www.greenvalleyranchresort.com/

It would be nice if the Desert Rose had a water slide or something. Definitely check pool hours at any place you book. I assume the Desert Rose would be fine, but the other hotels want you out of the pool and in the casino. I think Bellagio closed up their pool everyday at 4 pm.

Here are 278 reviews about the Desert Rose:

We have chosen the Desert Rose this time for a change, I agree that with kiddies on holiday staying in a casino hotel is not much fun. I think there are two or three pools at the Desert Rose, they have a great rate too.

I wouldn't stay at the Tropicana with kids. It's not the cleanest place anymore and the pool is so ho hum....I would stay at the Excalibur or Luxor if I was going with kids....Even MGM, too. Maybe the off strip hotels with bowling alleys would be a good idea for a night or two, you can stay a few here and a few there.

I'd go with the Flamingo. The kids will love the pool, and the hotel is easy to navigate for older persons, ie you don't have to walk through a mile-long casino just to get out the front door.

We had a family reunion last summer in downtown LV, and stayed at the Golden Nugget. Really liked it myself, though the kids and teens were pretty bored downtown. They liked the pool, but that was about it. The 21 plus set liked it downtown.

I think the Flamingo is a good choice for your family reunion. Prices will be very moderate, the pool is fantastic and the location on the Strip cannot be beat. The women in the group will appreciate the Flamingo's close proximity to Vegas' great shopping venues. The Flamingo is easy to navigate and is fairly close to the street (as someone else pointed out) which makes it a great choice for older people.

It will be incredibly hot in July and choosing a hotel that is centrally located on the Strip will definitely be a bonus.

Have fun planning your family reunion.

http://www.cheapovegas.com/index.php I think this is a good site to get ideas. FYI - if you go to a pool with waves, etc., you might want to pick up some inexpensive floats, etc.

We stayed at the Mandaly bay a few years ago and they rented tubes for $10 a day (??)
