Family friendly Las Vegas hotels

Hi, My husband and I are taking our kids (9 & 14) to Las Vegas in Feb. and are looking for a moderately priced family-friendly hotel. Any suggestions? Also, what shows do you suggest we take them to? It's our first time there so we need a lot of guidance!

It kind of depends on what you expect to be kid friendly.

Popular with families (and very reasonably priced)is Excalibur which also has a very nice location. They also have a dinner show with knights and pricnesses. My personal favorite kid friendly show however is Lance Burton at the Monte Carlo, which also is a nice place to stay.

Be sure and walk everyone through the Forum shops and catch the free animatronic shows (sp?) there.

You will see families at most of the strip hotels. If it was me I would stay out of Bellagio, Paris, Harrahs, Ballys, Venetian, Tropicana, NYNY, MGM off the top of my head.

Please bear in mind that Vegas is not a great kid place. I personally am not in favor of kids in sin city. Since it sounds like you are set on going, by all means, stay on the strip.

Thanks for the suggestions. Unfortunately, the kids have to go because my daughter is the reason we're out there. She is in an athletic event being hosted at UNLV over the weekend so we thought we would try to make the best of the trip and have a little fun while we're there.

I'm sorry, but I have to disagree with the suggestion of The Excalibur. While it is somewhat kid friendly, it is certainly not one of the great places to stay in Las Vegas. We have stayed at Paris more than once (which I like very much). Great location, good restaurants, close to shopping. We stayed at Aladdin once because I got a great rate of $69 per night - couldn't beat it. We have also stayed at Treasure Island, which is very nice. You might take them to see the Cirque du Soleil show "Mystere" at Treasure Island or "O" at Bellagio. These shows are very entertaining - our son loved them both. I'm not sure why the other poster said to stay away from The Venetian, Bellagio, New York, New York or MGM Grand. These hotels are fun to walk through and take in the sights. Obviously, you are going to try to keep your children away from adult-themed activites.

Our son has been to Vegas three times since he was 12 (now almost 17). We had a good time - experiencing the hotels, the Cirque shows, great shopping and restaurants. He had fun and so did we.

Enjoy your trip!

I would consider the Luxor. What could be cooler to kids your age than staying in a pyramid?! My husband and I stayed there a couple years ago and although I agree that Vegas isn't a place I'd go with kids I think you'd enjoy staying there. Just beware that when you are walking on the streets on the Strip there are panhandlers on every corner handing out pornography advertisements. I don't believe they are allowed to hand them to children but they flash them in the faces of every adult passing by. These become littered on the sidewalk as the day/night progresses so be mindful of that. Just a nuisance for most of us but I'd keep an eye on kids. I saw quite a few interested young boys picking these up off the ground! I've heard the Excalibur jousting show is fun and relatively affordable. A great way to spend time in Vegas is just wandering around the hotels and taking their settings in. Volcano at the Mirage, the lions in the MGM, New York NY rollercoaster, etc.

Visit the Excalibur but don't stay there. The place always smells like stale donuts to me but they have good games for the kids. Lance Burton IMO puts on the best kid show because of the audience participation. Monte Carlo has a neat magic shop your kids may like also.

First of all, feel free to email me. A nice stay would be The Orleans...off the strip but has a shuttle every 15 minutes for free that runs to Barbary Coast and you can get to everything from there so easily on the strip (the great places). The Orleans has a bowling alley, a movie theater, several small fast food places to eat and larger restaurant places to eat. Rightly priced for families. I enjoyed my stay there. Not a problem at all shuttling back and forth either..always there and always ready...no hassle. I've stayed at Bally's, Mirage and walked into and checked all the rest. Beings it will be February and you want to occupy them I think The Orleans would be great. Have fun!
