fall foliage near the big apple

We have the week of oct 18th off and i am thinking of Saratoga springs. It seems anywhere north of that is peaking now. I love that orange and red and yellow stuff. Please give me some suggestions as to where to go to soak in some of those colors. We will be heading from the big apple. I have not seen long island in the fall. i am wondering how does it compare with upstate NY. Off the beaten track is fine but i would need accomodation recomendations.
thanks

Saratoga Springs may be a bit too far north for the foliage by the 18th. I would recommend just driving up north along the east side of the Hudson River to the mid-Hudson Valley/Catskill Mountains area, south of Saratoga Springs.
As for accommodations, you probably already too late to get anything decent on a weekend.

Just drive up north on Route 9 instead of the Thruway, and stop as you go. Any of the small towns south of Albany are good places to explore. Try Rhinebeck, or visit the New Hyde Park mansions.
