Fall day trip: Lake Geneva or Cedarburg?

Hi everyone!

My husband and I always take a day trip from Chicago to an apple orchard in Elkhorn, WI that we really like. This year we were thinking of visiting either Lake Geneva or Cedarburg after apple picking at the orchard. Lake Geneva is a lot closer (15-20 mins), with Cedarburg being an additional 60 mins away from Elkhorn. However, we're totally willing to do it if it's worth the trip.

Lake Geneva seems to be more of a summer destination, whereas Cedarburg has the small-town historic feel that we like so much. We're basically looking for a town we can visit that has good local shopping, nice restaurants to choose from, and we just want to be able to walk around and take in the scenery.

Does anyone have any opinions on which town to visit for the day? We're looking at early October. Stick with Lake Geneva because it's closer, or take the trip to Cedarburg because it's worth it?

Thanks so much!

Which apple orchard? We're always looking for new places to try.

My vote would be for Cedarburg -- it just says "fall" to me more than Lake Geneva, and it could be a beautiful drive.

The Apple Barn Orchard!

Thanks so much! We were leaning toward Cedarburg, but also heard good things about Lake Geneva, but yeah, I think Cedarburg is more "fall."

I certainly wouldn't go out of my way to visit Cedarburg--it really isn't much of a town. A few shops, not known for restaurants, nothing I'd particularly describe as scenery.

I live closer to Lake Geneva, too and have only been there a couple of times. Too slick and touristy for us. I like the charm of Cedarburg and go there a couple of times a year.

It all boils down to personal taste. In Cedarburg we like the Cedarcreek Settlement Shops. There is a store with pottery on the top floor that I really enjoy. They've gotten more than their share of money from me over the years. There is a restaurant inside the shops called Cream and Crepe Cafe that is good. About a year ago they opened another out back on the River called the Anvil Pub. I've only eaten there once but it was very good and the weather was great for sitting next to the creek. Small antique store across the side street and plenty of coffee shops as you stroll the main street.
