Fall Black Hills Itinerary Help - CSP Base
Would love some help deciding what sites to combine for each day of our fall family Black Hills trip (we have 2 teen girls and a 12yo boy). We fly in to Rapid City from Cincinnati late Saturday, October 13 and fly home early the following Saturday. We'll have a car and have reservations at a cabin near the State Game Lodge in Custer State Park resort Sun-Thurs nights. We are an active family, like to pack a lot in, and while the kids enjoy beautiful sites and education they also like to have some fun. How should we include things such as Badlands, Minuteman, Wall Drug, Mt Rushmore, alpine slide, ?Mammoth Site, Jewel Cave, Mt. Coolidge, Crazy Horse, Devil's Tower, and should we spend a day in Spearfish/Deadwood? Maybe an ATV adventure? Anything else not to miss?
Sat PM - Fly in to Rapid City late, stay at hotel there.
Sun - Wall Drug, Minuteman Missile Tour, Badlands (take the loop back to CSP?), check in to CSP
Mon - ?
Tues - ?
Wed - ?
Thurs - ?
Fri - Drive to Rapid City in afternoon, stay at hotel there that night

That's a lot of sights to see. You might find that a lot of the touristy/fun things for the kids are closed by then so it would be best to google some things and see what their closing dates are before finalizing your itinerary.
I always tell people that Badlands is best early morning or evening. The formations look better and you're more likely to see animals. Mid-day is the worst and I think that's why most people do a fairly quick drive through and only spend a couple hours. If you can somehow rearrange to spend a night in Custe, that would be best. Perhaps delay your arrival in Custer by one night?
Crazy Horse is a bit of a letdown I think. Fairly pricey for a monument that's nowhere close to finished and can only be viewed from quite a distance. You could consider Wind Cave in it's place. You're also going to want to spend a couple days in Custer just hiking and sightseeing rather than leaving every day to go somewhere else.
Devils Tower is about 2.5 hours from Custer State Park. IF you decide to include it, I would either do it at the beginning or end of your trip and include an overnight in Deadwood/Spearfish as well. Not sure that it makes sense as a day trip from Custer.
