Fairmont Orchid good alter to 4S?
Yikes, just checked room rates at the Four Seasons Hualalai on Big Island and wondering if the Fairmont Orchid would be a better (cheaper) alternative? The Hilton Waikola Village seems like too much of a circus and the rooms look very "average".
Looking for luxury with beautiful grounds and rooms, decent service, and in a good location, but not at 4S prices... Thanks!

My opinion only the Orchid is 2nd best resort after the 4S, most luxurious. The Hilton attracts a lot of families, it is not in the same tier as the other 2 hotels. After the 4S we have stayed at the Fairmont and the Hapuna and liked the Fairmont the best. I also prefer it's location, closer to shops and dining alternatives.

Actually, I had one of the best spa treatments of my life at the Orchid. If you can swing an oceanside massage I'd definitely go for it. There are sea turtles in the water just below and the sounds of the ocean take you to another place I almost fell when I stood up, that's how out of it I was from the wonderful massage
Favorites:
-covered canopy beach chairs
-turtles along the shore (it is a protected area where there is hard lava rock)
-the aveda bath products
-the views of the nieghboring islands
-we really enjoyed the man made semi-circle shore. I know some people prefer the naked ocean but I felt more protected from sharks

We loved the Orchid. The grounds and service are excellent. The rooms are big and very pleasant. I think they had big bathrooms, can't really remember.
The food there, in every place, is excellent. We would have the buffet every morning, at the restaurant in the hotel, not by the ocean, and it was the best buffet I have ever been to. They served fresh fish every morning, and these amazing macadamia nut sticky buns. The restaurant by the ocean was where we would eat lunch. Their poke' was excellent. Nice views too.
Be sure and go up the street to the Mauna Kea. Also a beautiful hotel. The most incredible views. Great place to play golf, have lunch, or a drink. Definately worth checking out just to see it.

My husband and I also decided on the Orchid after getting sticker shock from the 4S and Kona Village. We had a lovely trip there and were very happy with our choice.
Be sure to do some snorkeling off the hotel's beach. We saw tons of turtles without going out too far.

We stayed at the next door Mauna Lana, which we liked. We walked around the grounds of the Orchid and it looked really nice. I think you'll be more than pleased. Enjoy the Big Island!
(We've also stayed at the Hilton Waikaloa when our kids were younger and I agree it's great for families, but not so much for adult luxury and pampering.)
