Fairfield Myrtle Beach West Winds
Has anyone ever stayed at the West Winds in North Myrtle beach. We are traveling from CT to SC and want to spend 3 nights in Myrtle Beach. Also, would love to have your input and recommendations on restaurants and things to to. We are a family of four with a 9 and 6 year old. Thanks

Never stayed at the West Winds. We live here in SC, and I'd recommend going to Broadway at the Beach (large complex with Imax, Mini-Golf, Acquarium, shops, dining, etc.). Also I think your kids would love Alligator Adventure, located next to Barefoot Landing. For lunch, try Johnny Rockets or River City Cafe. For good seafood go down to Murrells Inlet.

Jazzy,
From the website info I found, it looks like your hotel is in Atlantic Beach. This is a town in the midst of North Myrtle Beach that appears to have had a difficult time financially. If you walk past it on the beach side, you wonder what could have happened to leave it looking like a war zone.
That said, I am not familiar with your hotel (nor its location between 33rd Avenue South and 34th Avenue South), so I cannot comment on its condition.
If your intent is to stay in or near Atlantic Beach, that's fine, I just wanted to make sure you're aware that there are some issues as to its condition. Also, you should be aware that May 10-19 and Memorial Day weekend host two separate Bike Weeks (motorcyles), with the Memorial Day event located in Atlantic Beach.
If you are uncertain of your hotel choice, I would look at anything North of 27th Avenue South (that is, 27th, 26th, 25th, etc. and then picking up at 1st Avenue North, 2nd North, etc.). All of this North Myrtle Beach area is generally fine.
If you're not on a tight budget or want to splurge, I'd highly recommend Kingston Plantation. It's between North Myrtle Beach and Myrtle Beach, and it is the best resort/hotel I know of in the area.
Kim gave you some great tips about things to do. And while Murrells Inlet (about 45 minutes south of N. Myrtle Beach) is well-known for seafood, there are plenty of great places to eat in North Myrtle Beach too. For instance, Duffy Street Seafood Shack (seriously); T-Bonz (at Barefoot Landing, a great place for lunch); Rockefeller's Raw Bar; King's Famous Pizza; Marker 350 (on the intracoastal waterway); Chestnut Hill (although this is getting a little south of N. Myrtle Beach); Carraba's (it's a chain restaurant, but with great italian and seafood); and Benny Rappa's (great italian and some seafood--my wife had a lobster ravioli that was awesome, and my scallops & pasta was delicious).
Have a great time!

Chuck/Kim: thank you both for replying to my email. Your tips on things to do and places to dine are really helpful. At the moment I am a little skeptical about the hotel and location... Believe it or not we were trying to go to New Bern but our hotel of choice was not available sooo...we decided to venture down to South Carolina and see what it has to offer. The hotel happens to be a time share of a friend that sold us their days and we are simply trying it out, without the pressure to buy, to see if we like it...

Jazzy,
I looked at a more detailed map last night, and West Winds could be just outside and south/west of Atlantic Beach. If that's correct, then technically it would be in the section called Windy Hill.
Windy Hill is fine, so long as there is some separation between the West Winds and Atlantic Beach. (I hate to sound so negative about AB, it receives a lot of criticism but apparently has a lot of history and has some city officials who are trying to change things.)
Oh, one more think about Windy Hill--a huge water run-off pipe is being constructed that will extend 1/4 mile out to sea. It has a small part of the beach disrupted, but that is perhaps 1/2 mile south of where you would be. It's a bit of an eyesore even from where I am (several miles north), but it will help the beach situation when it's finished.

We stayed at Fairfield West Winds about 10 years ago. It was very nice then and we thoroughly enjoyed our stay. It was in a nice area, close to Barefoot Landing and lots of restaurants. Of course this was 10 years ago so I can't vouch for it now, but I would have highly recommended it then. Some 2 bedroom condos are larger than others though, so ask .
