I don't know On the avenue.
Excelsior is nice, has been renovated # 6-7 years ago, and well.
But service is sometimes (very) bad...,
and often indifferent.
The situation is nice, near central park, the museum of natural history and the new york historical society.
Subway at the corner of the 81st/CPW.
The area is "full" of nice restaurants with one "italian" cheap (Isabella's) and Ocean Grill ,both on Columbus, and there is a flea market on Columbus every sunday in a school(columbus and 75/76), but quality varies with the weeks.

The location for both hotels is great. I have stayed at On the Ave and really liked it. I like the look and feel of the place - it just feels modern and I like that. I would call both hotels and ask about the size of the room. We had a Deluxe corner room and it was a lot bigger than the other Deluxe rooms (same price). I just called the Reservations Manager and requested the larger room. The only complaints I had was very slow wireless and the public deck area wasn't really as nice as pictured. You probably won't be spending much time out there in December anyway.

Highly recommend Bettola on Amsterdam (between 79th & 80th) for Italian. Also agree with Ocean Grill. Lots of good restaurants in this area. I'm jealous - can't wait to go back!

I have stayed at On The Ave...and I really liked the hotel as well. Great location...Upper West Side! Lots to do and easy walking distance to most. Like the post above...I would call about the size of the rooms because On The Ave's were nice, modern but kinda tight! Have fun

If they're the same price, I'd probably go for On the Ave. Their smallest rooms are small, but it's a much more up to date hotel than the Excelsior. Doublecheck that they don't have a better rate on the specials section of their website.
