Gardyloo, don't spill the beans about LGB...!! Once everyone discovers our little hometown gem of an airport, the paradise of quick TSA lines, lovely outdoor waiting areas, inexpensive dining options (and a wine bar!) and quick plane loading will be a faded memory!
LAX has always been tough, but what do you expect? They let a full-blown city grow and completely surround an incredibly busy international airport, preventing necessary facility expansion. It's going to take some time to figure out what can make LAX work.
I'd start with the horrible TSA lines...!

HUSH RJW.
I haven't been through TBIT post-remodel which seems to be getting mostly positive reviews.
The biggest problem with LAX is that it has multiple terminals that are not connected. If you are flying without connections, and use SuperShuttle, taxi or even "gasp" public transport to get to the initial hotel it is much less difficult. I always advise friends to look into booking any car rental from a city location, if possible.

FYI: The Burbank Amtrak station is directly across the street from the main entrance to the Burbank airport. There is a commuter rail line in addition to Amtrak that uses this station.
The Amtrak Pacific Surfliner goes to Los Angeles Union Station.
Cars can be rented at LAUS.
There is also a shuttle service from the train station (LAUS) to the L:AX airport
