We have not stayed in either of them but compared to corporate profiles we would alway pick Embassy Suites. Their world is always inward and very pleasant and you have no parking problems. If you truly enjoy them they are very much the same everywhere. I would not expect the other to do anything grand but based on location they might have a better view. It would help if you would indicate why you are having second thoughts. There are a great number of places to stay in that area others than those two.

Have not stayed at either, but know the area quite well. I think the Doubletree is in "downtown" Monterey, which is not all that great because it's not the part of the city that the tourists want to see anyway. The Embassey Suites is on the beach in Sand City, I believe, but at any rate quite a way from the main tourist attractions of Monterey but on a pretty beach. I would guess it's about 3 miles from the Embassey Suites to Cannery Row, but it also requires a car to get to Cannery Row from the Doubletree. Hope this rather confusing post helps. If you wanted a really well located, economical hotel in Monterey, I would suggest the Otter Inn, walking distance to Cannery Row and the Aquarium as well as Fisherman's Wharf.

Embassy Suites Monterey Bay in my opinion is much better than that of Doubletree. I stayed there last time for four nights and found it to be very good every single day I was there. It is located about two miles from Cannery Row. Although I found this to be nice especially since you can then getaway for a while from all the people. It is located in Seaside/Sand City, which the beach is only two blocks away from the hotel. Seaside/Sand City beach is a large sandy beach that many people use often for kite flying on windy days.
I personally would keep with Embassy Suites and I think you will see that it is truely a spectacular hotel!
Any questions please feel free to ask me!

Just returned from Napa and Monterey last night. We stayed at the Marriott which is right across the street from the Doubletree. We loved the location! Although typically the DT is not my first choice in hotels, this one looks very nice from the outside, and it is on Stanton Plaza which is steps from Fisherman's Wharf. The Maritime Museum and the Pacific House is on the square as well.
The aquarium is a 1.2 mile easy stroll on recreation trail, but there is a free shuttle bus called the "Wave" that you can pick up at all the tourist sites including F.W. We walked to Cannery row and aquarium, took the bus back, and were dropped off at the Doubletree.
By the way, we had dinner at Cafe Fina one night on the wharf - absolutely great food. Their chowder is like a bisque, very creamy with a hint of white wine and a very small sprinkling of finely chopped tomatoes. Try it, it's not mom's recipe but it is wonderful. I had the prawn risotto, and it's the closest thing to Venice
