Embassy Suites Chevy Chase or Alexandria
Reposting into d.c. thread
We will be in d.c. with our two kids the last week of June. I can't decide which is ES will be more convenient, the one at old town Alexandria or Chevy Chase. I think both are convenient to metro for our day trips to the Capitol area and Smithsonians but we also want a place where we can walk around at night with the kids.

The ES in Chevy Chase is literally atop the Friendship Heights Metro stop. We found it just delightful to get off the metro at the end of a long day and have only a couple of escalators between us and our room. It's also part of a mall in an upscale area with plenty of shopping and chain restaurants like Cheesecake Factory.

Another vote for the ES in Chevy Chase. The ES is on top of the metro like Anon said, and there are good stores and eats right at your feet. Love shopping at Loehman's and Filene's Basement, and eats at Maggiano's (or Corner Bakery) and Booeymonger's (sandwiches) are good close to home options. Breakfast is easy either at Corner Bakery or across the street at Cosi (coffee shop).
The neighborhood is really safe, although not much to see while walking around. The ES in Old Town may give you more things to look at, but I think the ES location at the metro is far more convenient.
Tip -- you don't have to take the metro everywhere. You can easily hop on the bus for $1.25 (ask the driver for a transfer and get on as many buses as you want for a 3 hr period) and head down to G'town. The 30, 32, 34, 35 and 36 bus will all take you there and home again. Buses are very safe and easy way to travel.
Enjoy your trip!

Thank you everyone and thank you for the bus tip beanweb. When we went to California we took the bus to Santa Monica and my kids loved it because it was like a sightseeing trip and they liked obderving all the people on it. I just hope it's not too congested. I'll try it after rush hour

The Old Town Embassy Suites is directly across the street from the King Street Metro. Convenience-wise, it's a toss up between the OT and CC locations. But OT has a lot more to do and see, and is great for walking around at night. Do the Ghost Tours that start from the tourist office, about a 15-20 minute walk from your hotel straight down King Street.
