Interesting you should ask. I posted a question about the Gate1Travel tour of Croatia and got this reply from "thursdaysd": I went to Egypt with them a few years back. Excellent guide, reasonable hotels. Delivered what was advertised.
Several years ago I went to Egypt on my own. It is a very interesting place, and if I went again, I would take a tour to protect me from the locals who pester tourists who don't have a buffer.
Have fun.

happytrails - we did Egypt tour in 2001 (still the most incrdible travel experience I have ever had). The locals "pester" everyone who they think might have money - on tours, off tours; kids, adults, men, women. They want tips, to sell trinkets. Even though we were on a tour, we spent about 1/3 of the time on our own - not appearing to be connected to a tour. I did not find any difference in pestering at either time. We clearly looked like tourists, however, and went to places tourists would be likely to go. So perhaps if one or the other was not the case, the pestering would be less.
