Edisto or Hilton Head Island

We were looking for a timeshare at Hilton Head Island and have been offered a week on Edisto Island (Fairfield Oceans resort). How do the two compare? (We haven't been to either one.)

We are taking 4 kids (13-22) who love to swim and and play tennis. We all enjoy scenic beauty (more than built up areas and the live entertainment scene) but we also enjoy trying different restaurants for dinner.

Any thoughts?

Oops! Forgot to mention that my husband and 3 sons love to play golf! How do the golf courses compare? More to choose from on Hilton Head?

Thanks!

Edisto is very laid back and as I remember only one golf course. Lovely beach area though. Lots of homes/cottages and FF is the only resort there. You are rather far from things at Edisto, but we really liked it. HH does have a lot more golf courses and things to do. If you want more info go to www.tug2.net and ask your questions of other timeshare owners.

We drove to Edisto one day when staying at the Wild Dunes Resort in the Isle of Palms, and there was nothing there. Just a bunch of old looking houses. Hilton Head has way more to offer. There are golf courses, resturants, marinas, tennis courts. I would choose Hilton Head! We stayed in a condo at the Palmetto Dunes Resorts, and it was very nice with a nice pool. There is way more going on! To get away from it all, Kawiah Island is nice. It also has a great golf course and beach.

Thank you for the responses. Sounds like Edisto may not be what my crew would consider an ideal vacation spot at this stage.

JoAnn, thanks for mentioning the timeshare website. I think it will be very helpful!

Since I have lived in SC all my life, I have beento every beach in the state. Hilton Head has more to offer - but do you want to tangle with traffic, lines, over development etc. It is true that Edisto has only one resort, but it also has less crowds, and more scenic beauty. Edisto is where to go if you really want a vacation. Bike paths, great fishing, less crowded beaches, not as much traffic. And, if you want to go to a restaurant for dinner, Charleston is not that far away.

We decided to try Edisto Island in June after all and will visit Charleston as well. So I'll be interested in seeing the recommendations for restaurants (in Charleston) on this forum. Also, if anyone can recommend a golf course between Edisto and Charleston that would be helpful if my guys want to play on more than 1 course.

Thanks much!

As we plan a trip to Hilton Head Island this year, I happened to come across my old post about Edisto and the recent follow up question about our trip.

We had a lovely time but wouldn't go back again. A key reason is that the golf course wasn't well enough maintained and my husband and sons wouldn't want to play on it again. But the island was lovely spot for us to vacation that year - partly because it was low key and there wasn't tons of stuff to do.

The condo at Edisto was beautiful, and it had just been finished. The pool out back was still under construction but we could use one of the other pools. We enjoyed eating at a restaurant called the Post Office - great food! And we really enjoyed the days that we spent in Charleston after our stay in Edisto.

Over the years, we've gone to Pawley's Island, Outer Banks, Oak Island, Sanibel Island, Edisto, and several places in Hawaii. Edisto was my least favorite but that is partly because a good golf course is one of our requirements. Edisto could be perfect for other families.
