Eclectic Restaurants in Portland, Old Port

My wife and I (as well as 1 yr old son) will be in Portland July 3-6 for our wedding anniversary, staying at Holiday Inn on the Bay. Recommendations for cool, romantic restaurants with great food w/o attitude would be much appreciated.
Thanks much!

Street and Company..or take a mailboat ride out to the Chebeague Inn for your basic (but great) Lobster dinner. Some of my fondest summer memories are of sitting on the big porch at the Chebeague Inn with a gin&tonic in my hand.

Thanks for the info. PamSF! I saw some other posts about Chebeague...is it a quick boat ride? Have you done the ferry to Nova Scotia?

There is a pizza place right on the water that serves the most delicious brick oven pizzas with all sorts of creative toppings (or plain if you want!). I'm sorry, I can't come up with the name, but the locals could definitely direct you. It's in an old warehouse, and the ovens are exposed in the interior. In fact, the waiters actually chop the wood for the ovens right inside! It's also very child friendly - as long as you don't let the kid wander around the axes and ovens!

We took a water taxi to The Diamond's Edge restaurant on Great Diamond Island. We had a great dinner and then caught the last ferry back to Portland. I think the restaurant is open for lunch; it would be a lovely excursion for your family. Be sure to make reservations!

Thanks to all who posted replies with suggestions about the restaurants! Any favorites on breweries?

paldridge~the boat ride to either Chebeague or Great Diamond will be relatively short and pleasant. Folks ride out to both for dinner. I have eaten both places and found the Chebeague to have more classic Maine atmosphere(pine panelling, yachting flags, big porch to sit on for drinks). The food is more varied at Great Diamond but we were at Chebeague for the lobster dinner so it didn't much matter. I have not taken the ferry to Nova Scotia from Portland.

Gritty McDuffs for beer and there is also a brewery with a tour and everything on Munjoy Hill. I forget the name of the beer though.
Street & Co. is great as is Walter's and Perfettos on Middle St., and Fore St.(that's the name of the restaurant) (this is probably the nicest/most expensive). Portland has many great restaurants and bars, have a good time.

A great 'eclectic' restaurant is Katahdin, just down the street from the HI. We've enjoyed many meals there and the bartender makes an incredible martini!
