Eastern Long Island
We are thinking of going to Montauk or the Hamptons for a weekend this summer and I am not familar with the area. I would like to stay right on the beach. Can someone recommend a hotel please?

There are tons of motels on/very close to the beach in Montauk. We like the Ocean Resort Inn (about 90 feet from the beach), the Royal Atlantic, the Surf Club, Ocean Beach Resort. All are 'in town' as well. Montauk is very laid back; accommodations are pretty basic (not luxurious!). I LOVE it out there.
The "Hamptons" (i.e. Southhampton, East Hampton, etc.) are often more of a 'scene' (clubs, 20 somethings renting houses) whereas Montauk is much more relaxed.

Most of the towns don;t have motels/hotels on the beach - it's either private estates or town beaches. Motels/inns are usually in the middle of town - away from beaches.
To be right on the beach you're better off in Montauk (several motels) or Amagansett - which has several condo colonies right on the beach - giving you the benefit of a little more room and your own kitchette for breakfast and snacks/drinks. (Although the later may rent by the week only - you can check and see if they'll do a weekend.)
Will you take the train or Jitney out and get a car there? Or drive out (not recommended on a Friday afternoon or eveing - traffic can be interminable)

www.oceandunes.net (the Ocean Dunes) is on the beach right down from town. You can walk (and, most importantly, walk home) from the Stephen Talkhouse-great bar & live music. Each unit is individually owned and well maintained.
