Please give us more details in order to help you better.

Budget?
Interests?
Length of trip?

Also, will you be renting a car and driving yourselves, or do you prefer some type of organized tour?

I took my mom, 2 aunts and an uncle on this two-week trip in October 2005 and it was wonderful! We started in D.C. and ended in the Nantahala National Forest in NC. The fall foliage was at various stages along the way.

We spent 2 nights in D.C. and visited the memorials, White House, etc., etc.

We left D.C. and spent a half-day driving south on scenic Skyline Drive to Afton, VA. It was foggy so we didn't do too many of the turnouts because we couldn't see much. I plan to do this drive again...without the fog.

We spent 2 nights in a beautiful rental home at Wintergreen Resort in Afton, VA. Our side trip was to Monticello, the home of Thomas Jefferson.

We took our time and spent the next week or so driving the Blue Ridge Parkway...words cannot describe just how beautiful this drive is. There are so many turn-outs and side trips that it was hard to pick. I'll just mention some of the longer and memorable ones we did.

The first day on the BRP we drove from the beginning to Peaks of Otter. I remember stopping, exploring and taking lots of pictures at Yankee Horse Ridge and Wigwam Falls then White Oak Flats.

We spent one night at Peaks of Otter which is an older, but charming lodge that's maintained by the US Park Service. I picked this spot not just for it's location along the BRP, but for the spectacular view...which we never saw because of the fog. The grounds were lovely and I would choose this place again. We took a side trip to the town of Bedford, VA and visited Johnson's Apple Orchard...beautiful drive and great stop!

We ate a delicious breakfast at the lodge then headed on to Blowing Rock, NC. We stopped at a pumpkin patch we just happened to see along the BRP as well as several other stops, but I don't remember the names. As you drive the parkway and see a beautiful spot, just pull off an explore. We ate lunch at The Chateau Morrisette in Meadow of Dan, VA...special place! Shortly after lunch we stopped at Mabry Mill...one of the most photographed spots along the BRP.

We spent 3 nights in a condo at Chetola in Blowing Rock, NC. We loved this place and its surroundings so much that we went back there for a week last June and stayed in the same condo. Awesome, awesome place. Some of the side trips include: Moses Cone Park/Flat Top Manor, the incredible Churches of the Frescos (www.churchofthefrescoes.com), historical Mast General Store in Valle Crucis, NC and Grandfather Mountain. The town of Blowing Rock is charming with lots of wonderful shops and restaurants.

We left Blowing Rock and drove to Asheville. At the Linn Cove Viaduct, the fall color exploded. Unfortunately, the hurricanes preceded this trip and part of the BRP was washed out. We had to detour to get to Asheville. The side roads were beautiful, too.

We only spent one night in Asheville at Richmond Hill Inn. It's a lovely, lovely place with beautiful grounds. They had 3:00 tea and a fabulous breakfast the next morning.

We spent a half day at The Biltmore Estate then headed on to a mountain home in the Nantahala National Forest in NC. It's on the edge of the Great Smoky Mountains. I would like to have spent several days in Asheville.

I'll stop here. I apologize...this reply has turned into a trip report! I just started typing and reliving this trip and just kept going! We spent 3 nights in that mountain home with several side trips...but that's another trip report.
