The exemption is 800.00 per person so if you are by yourself or with a friend it's 800.00. If you are with family..husband maybe? then you get 1600.00...800 for each of you.
When I came back from Paris last Nov. I declared everything, had it listed and the amount and I was at a little over 1100.00. They just waived me through...I was very happy but shocked!!!! I think the duty over the 800.00 is about 10% so maybe it wasn't worth their time for the 30 bucks.
The trip before that when the exemption was only 400.00 I did have to pay 16.00 in duty.

crefloors,
I was surprised the same way the first time I came back with a bunch of bottles of brandy and wine. I listed them and expected to pay duty, but they just looked and sent me on.
I have since heard of a great many people having the same experience with wine, and no one ever paying duty on alcohol they bring back by airplane.
