Drving from Key West To Key Largo at Night

Here's a silly question....

Any problem driving back from Key West to Key Largo after hanging around for the Sunset Festivities...I will make sure that either hubby or I will be the DD! I guess what I am really asking is if Route 1 is a road that is easily traveled at night...I know it is a two hour ride...Thanks, NannyJan

I've travelled that road lots of times at night from Key West to Kendall in South Miami. I don't see any problems at all.

My husband and I have driven twice at night, never during the day. We didn't have any problems.

A funny story...on our first trip to the keys, it was dark, my husband was sleeping and I was driving and getting very tired. All of a sudden I saw a HUGE spider up ahead in the middle of the road, and I mean huge.

I was smacking my husband in the arm
telling him to look at this really huge spider and when we got close enough, realized it was a crab!!!! LOL

Dixiegirl,

If I thought it was a spider on the road and it was THAT big....I would have stopped the car and screamed at the top of my lungs...hubby would have woken up for sure! Spiders are my least favorite creatures of the natural world...

Thanks for the replies...sounds like night driving is not a problem...

We have doe that trip a few times and the only problem is a good portion of that highway is poorly lit so you really need to be carful. It is also a very boring drive because it is so dark out unlike driving the Keys during daytime hours.

No name's got a point. It's delightful to drive the Keys in the daytime, but it can seem rather barren at night. Also, be particularly careful going through the Key deer area in the lower Keys--around MM30 or so. The deer get out and about when the day gets cooler. Speed limit's reduced there, as well. It's well-posted--and enforced.

I 2nd the key deer warning..but it happened in day time...they can fly...I'd rather do the trip in the day...spend a night in Key West...it doesn't have to be downtown(OLD TOWN)....and leave early am......just my opinion...maybe I'm too old

I wanted to spend the night at Key West...don't even care where we stay as long as it is clean and bed is comfortable. The problem is we are booked for all our nights at the Key Largo Marriott and seems silly to check out and in again...AND we can't make Key West our last night there because we have a noon flight out of Fort Lauderdale on our last day...SO>>> it seems we will be doing the drive if we want to hang around for the sunset...unelss we can find a really CHEAP ROOM! NannyJan

PS I just don't want to fall in the ocean or anything!

I drove down to Key West and back from Miami last February. Lot's of people warned me about the dangers of driving through the keys, especially at night.

As we entered the Keys there was a big sign that posted the number of auto fatalities for the year. Apparently there are many accidents because people will pass up slower drivers and run headon into oncoming traffic.

I was really creeped-out by all the little white "memorial" signs on the side of the road...dozens and dozens of them where people died.

~be careful~

It is, however, if you've not traveled the stretch before, I would suggest doing it during the day as it is quite scenic.

Unless you have a reason to stay in Key Largo for all seven nights, I would pick up and go to Key West for a night or two. Key Largo does not give you a true feel for the keys as compared to the middle or lower islands. There are too many sites to see in Key West to be left for one day + the driving back and forth from Largo.

I agree with the other posters that it's not a safe drive at night.
