Driving to New York City

I've been told not to drive into the city due to the heavy traffic. Are there places outside the city to leave a car? Or do you have other suggestions?

Thanks!

There's a large "inter-modal transportation center" in New Jersey referred to as "MetroPark". Large parking garage. Both Amtrak and (the cheaper) New Jersey Transit trains stop there, and continue to Penn Station NYC.

Hi Lisa,

We need a lot more info to answer this question accurately. Where are you coming from? When will you be arriving into the city? How long will your stay be? Everything depends on the answers to these questions.

Hi, You can drive TO the city-it is best that you do not drive while IN the city..Drive in and Park and leave your car for the duration.

We drive into NYC from Boston regularly, without paying much attention to the time of year or time of day, and we've never had much of a problem. Once, we experienced a crawl going north on whatever avenue when we emerged from the Lincoln Tunnel (we were coming from Baltimore), but only for half a dozen or so blocks. And, we still managed to check in and catch the Circle Line cruise in plenty of time. We always plan the route to our hotel in advance, taking note of the one-way streets. Then, we leave our car in the hotel garage for the duration of our stay. We've never had a problem leaving the city (usually done on a Sunday).
