driving route Houston/Charleston , SC
Does anyone know if it's better to drive from Houston to Charleston, SC using I-10 to Mobile and then head north on I-65 to Montgomery and then on to Atlanta and Columbia, SC or would you take I-10 all the way to Jacksonville and then I-95 north to Charleston? Just wondering which is better as far as traffic, quality of interstate, truck traffic, etc.

thanks.

Gut reaction - I just prefer that route
Stop and think about it?
1) ditto rkkwan about Atlanta traffic
2) heading across on I-10 may be a bit boring, but you are going to make good time and not have to deal with any traffic issues
3) it offers better places to stop. Either just at a hotel off the xway ramp, or a short detour to a Panhandle beach or just about anywhere along the coast once you get to the Atlantic
4) There are great options anywhere between Jax and Charleston to stop if you are ready to, or you can just do the 4 hour drive on xway
5) I drive the Atlanta-Columbia - Myrtle Beach route (yes, I know you are going to Charleston) and I despise it. It is just deadly boring. Have to do it again in a week and am not looking forward to it.
Unless you have a reason to head into Atlanta, I'd just stay due east until you hit the water!

Given that I don't like to drive more than 500 miles a day, this is the route I would take
Houston to Pensacola Beach area - and spend the night there. Eat some great seafood and stroll the sand. Let your toes have some "sand time". Unless you are going to a Charleston area beach, you won't have another chance for "toes in the sand time" - which I love.
Pensacola to Savannah - another 500 mile day. Spend the night anywhere in Savannah, but preferably the Historic District. I'd eat at the Pink House and spend the evening strolling the squares.
Then, I'd just have a couple hour drive to Charleston and would be rested and ready for the next adventure.
