Leaving Thursday from DC via AMTRAK for me to NYC 4 a couple days and then over to NJ on Saturday. Driving starts next Monday. Have driven NE a lot, but when we start from the NYC area or have to go around NYC, it's always jammed with traffic. Can't even recall how many traffic back ups we have sat in. A couple years ago we left from the LES and got stuck around Yankee Stadium (no game causing jam) so figured I'd consult the Fodor's experts this time. Never done this long of a driving trip, so we'll see how it goes!

I think starting from NJ and avoiding the city altogether will make a huge difference. That and a little patience, knowing it's almost inevitable that you'll hit a snarl one place or another... But at least the worst part of your driving will be at the beginning: it can only get better.

I've noticed that there's really no such thing as a "reverse commute" around here any more. But if there's one anywhere, that stretch of the Palisades might well be it! And leaving after 9am will be good.

I'm sure you'll have a terrific trip!!

Yesterday we left NJ around ten and took the Palisades Pkwy to Tappan Zee and then the Merritt Pkwy...no trouble at all. The entire route to Portland was relatively traffic free. No backups or other Bothersome construction. again, thanks for all the suggestions.

Thanks, ggreen. Yes, the next five weeks will be short little 3-4 hour drives mostly on country roads.
