Driving from NYC to Richmond, VA

I am planning a trip from NYC to Richmond, VA. Taking I-95 all the way seems easier but I hear traffic nightmares around Baltimore and DC area. My co-worker suggested I take 81 south to Virginia and then 64 East to Richmond. I plan to leave around 3:00pm on Friday. Any suggestions?

For your trip, I-81/64 is a very long detour. I wouldn't do it.

Instead, consider taking I-97 south of Baltimore and then US301 to south of Federicksburg.

I've taken the routing by rkkwan several times, and been satisfied with it. I've also taken Rt 13 to Rt 301, crossing the Chesapeake Bay Bridge too. Like both equally, but more traffic lights on the 13/301 combo.

I took I-97 to US301 during rush hours and I was very satisfied with it. I would recommend this route to everyone. Thanks rkkwan and rb_travelerxATyahoo!!

If you are having anxieties about driving, why not take the train?
