Depends on where in LA you'd be driving from. Our friends drove over from the east side and said it took about 4 1/2 hours.

Its 300 miles, 5 hours with no traffic, can be up to 7 hours driving back to LA on a Sunday afternoon.

Watch the movie, Swingers, to give yourself an idea of what's in store.

We've done it several times. Can't remember how long. But be sure to stop off at Barstow for some outlet shopping.

when my son was three he would call it "droove" - he liked to go droove in the car.

Rule of thumb is six hours. On Fridays, take food, it's a parking lot. The drive through Palm Springs is nice, other than that it's a snooze.

I have driven it and it didn't seem all that bad, but once we flew from Miami via LAX and then a small American Eagle plane into Vegas. We flew fairly low and literally followed the highway. It was amazing. It was Friday night and there was a solid white streak of car lights the entire length from Los Angeles to Las Vegas.

unless you're really strapped for cash (in which case there's no point in going to vegas) i would fly. southerwest and america west have a gazillion flights a day from all the socal airports. check out the websites, where you can routinely find rt fares for under $100. well worth it. all it takes is one good pileup on i-15 (and believe me, they happen all the time) to turn what can be a 4-5 zip across the desert into a 9-10 hour odyssey through the 9th circle of hell. seriously.

I used to leave Las Angeles on a Friday afternoon and be in Vegas gambling before midnight~I think it would not be the same now. 5 hours did it then,of course we had a very fast car and driver

I'm for flying too. From LA most folks leave about 2 am to arrive in time for tomorrow. It saves hotel fees. Takes about 4 hours. And, you would never go anywhere near the Palm Springs area, so don't understand that response. From LA take the 10 to the 15 and keep going through the desert. I would pack sandwiches and coffee and wonder why you would ever drive.

Hi all,
I am driving from LA to Vegas on the 31st. Would it be a nightmare? Should I start early to beat the crowd? Can any one suggest a alternate route??

Thnx in advance

Rogers, I think that sounds like a disaster in the making. Jump on a plane if you can. Or leave LA at 5am.

What a nightmare drive for Roger! There really aren't any alternative routes that wouldn't require driving through other states. Any chance you can catch an early flight to Vegas?

Roger, either leave early, or leave really late...when the traffic may have let up some.Bring plenty of music, food and drink..and companions who are entertaining. It could be fun-an adventure~Have a good trip!
