101 isn't an interstate, but we just don't use the 'the'. I usually say I-5, 99, 101, highway 1. I also read something recently regarding how 'the' got into the name of SoCal freeways.

I did the drive up the PCH from LA to Santa Barbara and then took normal route after Santa Barbara.

The PCH drive is amazing, if you have time you should definitely do it.

MichelleY has it right -- Never ever 'I-101', just 101. I-5 or 5 are about equal usage IME. 50 is usually 'Hwy 50', but one hears just '50' a lot too. 99 -- plain and simple. Highway 1 or just 1 -- but people I know more often say Hwy 1.
