Hi meadow, I never go to SF without a jacket. You just never know when you might need it. Some areas of SF are warmer than others. And as the sun goes down it can get chilly. Do you have a lightweight blazer? That would work well. Or take a sweater but I would certainly take something. I always feel so sorry for tourist when I see them cold and miserable. Have a fun day!!

Take it from a Native and bring a light weight jacket. We tend to dress in layers as from one neighborhood to the next the weather changes. Small city that it is, there are many multi-climes!
P.s. Suze is right, you can buy a tourist sweat shirt for $10.oo anywhere around Fisherman's wharf.

LOL TripleSecDelay...summer time in SF can get a bit chilly, can't it?
Folks, SF is on a pennisular. There is the Pacific Ocean and the SF Bay.
The fog rolls in. The wind blows (especially on Market St.), the tall buildings put a lot of places in shadows etc. SF has microclimates. The Richmond District gets lot of fog.
North Beach always seems warmer, especially during the day.
Take a jacket, sweater or something! And if you wear shorts prepare to go back to your room to change to something warmer later in the day.
Layering is a very good way to prepare for SF. And enjoy your visit!

TripleSec, I think you're the big phony! I've been to S.F. MANY times during the summer and I've never needed a jacket. Obviously, you're the big phony because you didn't read what I said when I said that everybody is different and some people do get cold in S.F. no matter what time of the year it is. And obviously, you're one of those people.

LOL - my mom is one of those people who never gets cold (she was born in ND and lived on the CA coast most of her life, so maybe that is why).
In Feb we took a sailing cruise around Angel Island and although the weather was nice on land, it was darn chilly out on the water. I had on a couple layers, a hat, gloves, and a windbreaker with the hood up and cinched around my face. I was comfortable but pretty well bundled up. My mom, on the other hand, was wearing jeans and a sweater - no hat, gloves, or jacket - and she was perfectly fine.

Just got back from San Francisco, wine country, and Mendocino coast. Weather was nutty -- 100 degrees inland, 60 degrees on the coast, cold fog at night and in the morning in SF, give me a break!!!
I used a blazer and cheap washable silk shirts, with good results. Silk is cool in the heat and warm in the cold.
Plan for ridiculous temperatures and you'll be fine.

"The coldest winter I ever saw was the summer I spent in San Francisco."
Quote often attributed to Mark Twain.
I'm like Jim - rarely need a jacket myself, even on cool foggy mornings, but I always bring one. Invariably, I end up lending it to a companion who needs a 3rd layer.

Thanks everyone!! I was planning on bringing a brown blazer that I just bought (and love) but was concerned about whether it would look a bit excessive or out. I will definitely be bringing it along now. And now I know I won't look silly in pants.

I did get a jump-start on my fall wardrobe, tho!
