Since money is no onbject and you're thinking out west/national park/outdoors..Then you should reserve lakeside cottages at the Hyatt in Incline (lake Tahoe. They are beautiful, right on the private beach and they're expensive. It's near outdoor activity and golf.

Chuck - I must admit I had preconceived notions about Seaside before I ever stepped foot in it. I knew several people who owned homes there - and did not like them. When we vacationed in that area (in a rental fairly close to Seaside), we stopped by - and I just hated everything about it except for one store there that I still order things from. It just felt very plastic to me, and I didn't feel comfortable at all. I can be quite comfortable in posh places, but this place just gave me the willies! As someone else said, it is spooky. After we stopped there, someone in our group made reference to the Truman Show, which I had never seen. I finally watched it and that only added to my dislike of the place. It is like you're being watched - and judged. Do you own or are you renting? Are you a regular? Too clique-ish for me. Very artificial, contrived, cookie cutter, contained - whatever. It's vanilla and I like wild mango. I guess I shouldn't be so harsh on the place - millions of people love it and probably wouldn't be caught dead in places I like to travel. To each his own, but I did think that from what we know of HRH Edie, she and her "rich" family would love it.

Please, please, please, don't send Edie to Tyler Place or the Cloisters! She wouldn't feel comfortable among the guests there. They are wonderful places with lovely guests.
I have a better suggestion, finishing school. Her parents obviously neglected this area of her education.

Regular Poster,
Thanks for your insights. I think my wife & I dodged a bullet during our visits, probably because we pretty much just hung out together. We don't own anything in Seaside and have only rented 3 times (last time approx 3 years ago). I think my appreciation for Seaside is based on the extensive planning that went into it (and the apparently successful implementation of the plan). I acknowledge that there is thin line between good planning and contrivance.
Besides, as one who unashamedly admits a love for North Myrtle Beach (where we do own property), I am probably not a good defender for an upscale place like Seaside.
Good chatting with you.

Well, Chuck - I guess I'm just a firm believer that the best beach spots are those with a bamboo hut and a hammock - or a fabulous luxury villa if it's only one around. I guess I just prefer seclusion to an ant farm. I really like Navarre Beach, but I've also enjoyed Seagrove, Grayton. I prefer small scale places on islands - I'll wouldn' t be caught dead at Atlantis or any glitzy all-inclusive on a great island. In a great city, though - take me directly to the Ritz-Carlton, The Peninsula, The Oriental - whatever. It's just a personal preference of mine. I like the sand between my toes, a margarita in my hand, a charcoal grill outside, etc.

Just in case this is a real request-
I think the Charleston, SC, area has everything you require. You could rent a luxury home on the beach in Wild Dunes- great beach, nice resort, golf, tennis, babysitting services if needed, great pizza!
We do this every year (only 3 BR, and not on the beach) and they have lots of wonderful homes with plenty of room- some with private pools. The best part is it's only a few minutes drive into Charleston. Charleston is a wonderful city- lots of great restaurants, views, historic homes, interesting tours, and Spoleto in the spring. You get the beach and something to do when you get tired of the resort atmosphere. We use Island Realty, but you could check out Wild Dunes Realty too.
Have fun!

again, wow. this is the real edie. you can search this board for my name and see that i have been a semi-regular poster for quite a while. look on the europe board, planned a trip to ireland in Feb. and used the board a lot. i point this all out to indicate that i am not a troll. and this is the first post i have made to this thread since my long one this morning. there are fake posts from me on this thread and on another one. unfortunately, i can't control what other people write under my name.
yes i over reacted to sloanes answer, but i really found it offensive. i am sorry that my bout of engaging my mouth before i engaged my brain resulted in this mess. i am having a really bad day and took out my frustrations with other things on sloane. totally unneccessary, bitchy, and mean of me.
i do think it is possible to have a dream vacation stateside, by the way. and i am posting the the US board, if i wanted dream european vacations, i would post on europe.
i didn't mention in the first post about my parents wealth, i indicated money was not a big issue with this trip. sloane obviously interpretated that to mean this was some once in a lifetime trip for my parents, which it isn't. i simply meant that vacations are where my parents choose to spend their money. yes my sisters and i are lucky that they generously invite us along.
again, sorry about the brou-haha.

I did not think that at all edie. You said your family had taken trips to Europe, Mexico and the islands. I thought Dream vacation meant the trip of a life time. I did felt bad for you when I first read your response but it was so harsh I could not come to apologize or even respond. I have done a great deal of travel in my life for a person of my limited means. I would have given those suggestions to anyone. Don’t take so much to heart and I won’t either. Sorry.

Even if edie didn't care for Sloane's answer, I feel he was trying to be helpful. Maybe he just misunderstood!
When you get an answer you aren't interested in or an answer that didn't really help in what you are looking for, there's NO NEED to resort to name-calling and especially not profanity!! Take it with a grain of salt, girl! You got plenty of other answers to check in to!!

I was thinking about Edie's reaction to a bad day as I did my rush hour drive in pouring rain this morning and watching everyone's reaction to traffic frustration, and thinking her's was a computer version of road rage.
I think we have the opportunity to coin a new term here. We have road rage, we have air rage...what shall we name BB rage? How about "Forum Undecorum", or "Forum-lack-'o'-decorum"? Other suggestions? Lets be the first to give a name to this unfortunate trend.
