Can't wait for the kiddies to go back to class... C'mon , Edie asked for a stateside vacation, a family dream with an entire family, and got "go camping in New Zealand"!!?? If of course, you are intimidated by a foreign language? We all have major "Dream Vacations", but this was posted on the US board, and I think deserves some help without "Sloane" pontificating on her /his own regrets re: mama.

Ok what if Sloane was pontificating, and what if he/she was being condescending, did lovely Edie need to unload that dirty foul language all over for the rest of us to read. My goodness, not much classs there. But by golly she's rich so does she really have to behave?

Let's see, if I try to be helpful then I am a co-dependent according to James. And if I appear condescending I might incur the wrath of edie. And if I suggest anything as pedestrian as a dream vacation on the mainland US then I am naive. Oh what the hell . . .
edie, I suggest renting the biggest, best oceanfront house(s) available in Seaside FL (FL panhandle between Destin and Pensacola). I'm sure the website is designated *seaside* If you're not familiar with it, Seaside is a planned resort community that is fantastic, very different from any other resort I've seen. It was built to be a relatively self-contained, small beach town. And I think the planners achieved that with great success. The houses are lovely (pastel with tin roofs), there is a nice grocery store, art galleries (in an artist community toward the back of the town), a town square, a wine bar, a few nice shops, and a really cool pavillion across the beach road directly on the beach, with shops and restaruants (Bud & Allie's is great!). You could probably rent an oceanside deck for a special catered meal at sunset, as we saw one of the decks used for a wedding ceremony. Finally, the beach and water are wonderful, there is a great park nearby (Grayton Beach State Park), and plenty of excellent restaurants within a 10-20 minute drive.
Hope you and your family have a wonderful celebration!

o.k., o4fall, where then do YOU recommend the dysfunctional edie dickman and the rest of her family go for their "dream vacation"??
how about salem, massachusetts, and specifically, the witch museum, in which the rich parents will almost certainly find a portrait of their daughter.

Whether or not Sloane pontificated is not the point.... Edie didn't have to be so foul in her response - or better yet, didn't have to respond at all. I don't see why someone with so much travel experience and money needs our humble suggestions anyway - call your travel agent.
I don't see how you can have a "dream" vacation stateside with a short plane trip. To me, that's redundant - unless you have small dreams.

Sloane and Edie's rudeness aside, I would like to make a few suggestions.
The Cloisters - haven't stayed there but have been by it many times and it is magnificent.
Martha's vineyard- we stayed at a wonderful deluxe B&B there called Hob Knob Inn or if you choose, there are many gorgeous mansion/vacation homes to rent and the ativities and beach ulture are great.
Hope you find what you are looking for!

Yes - I think Seaside would be a perfect place for someone like Edie. It's a contrived, over priced place full of people incredibly pleased with themselves. There are some incredible homes in that area that are not contained in the Truman Show world of Seaside, but of course, for someone like Edie, the pomposity and prestige associated with a place like Seaside would fit her agenda nicely.

Because Sloane did not respond to specifically to each and every condition of the request, he/she gets reamed?
Have you ever seen all the posts where someone asks "Does anyone know about hotel X?" and there are 50 replies of "We stayed at hotel Y" and loved it!" She wasn't really specific . Staying in the US does not necessarily mean the flight would be shorter. A flight from Miami to Seattle, for instance, is longer than a flight from Miami to the Bahamas or Grand Cayman - and she did not indicate from where they would be flying - and only mentioned that the domestic first class seats would be "nice" - not a requirement. I do agree that Sloane's suggestion of camping in New Zealand is far stretch, especially with a one year old, but to each his own.

Hey Regular Poster,
I get the impression you didn't like Seaside when you visited there. Care to share the particular facts that helped form your opinion?
My wife & I have visited several times and did not feel oppressed by any self-possessed people. We are far from wealthy, and I do occasionally feel out of my league in more posh destinations. But didn't get that feeling at Seaside.

Just happened into this site in error, and re-affirmed why I don't spend much time chatting on the web.
1)If you ask for advice, you have to expect the good, the bad and the ugly.
You take what you need and move on,simply ignoring what you don't need.
2)Responding and re-responding to inane human behavior as shown in this post, is nothing but a waste of time.
Get a life people. Shut it down and go talk to your friends, you neighbors, your family, i.e. the people who know and love and care about you.
Taking to the anonynimities on the web is like living your life in Disneyworld. It ain't real.

I suspect Edie is a troll, but in case not...Edie, I would skip Seaside, it's just too "too", beautiful once, but now too developed for its own good. What was unique now appears to be contrived. We first came across it by accident when it had only a handful of homes and it was like walking into a dream. No more.
Instead I'd suggest a place not too far down the road from Seaside, and a bit more remote for enjoying the beach and all its pleasures....Ft Pickens, especially pleasant at dusk, knee deep water or better. You'll feel right at home.
