OMG...there are others that refer to their young 'uns as chickadees.
I was sitting on my screened porch talking on the phone to my daughter the other day. We've got a feeder near the porch and the chickadees were loud. Me: Do you hear that chickadee? Her: "Hear what?" Me: Chickadee! It took us a moment to catch the other's confusion. Shades of Eats Shoots and Leaves! LOL

i have been sleeping since my return thursday....but here's an update.
everyone recovered from the flu in three days. we left my brother's house as fast as we, disinfecting our way out, rented a car, and hit the road for santa cruz, where wedding friends had given us a nice little house.
we NEVER went to the doctor for that particular illness, it just passed through us and we bounced back up. fodorites, i just ASSUMED we contracted a bug on the plane, what with all that "recycled" air. one dose of airborne was not enough! (i knew that, but was just lazy or tired from doing all laundry all night).
surfing in santa cruz was good. the drive down monterrey bay was excellent, saw dolphins at pleasure point, shopped in carmel, spent an afternoon on the carmel beach.
feeling sick again, i decided against big sur and headed back to oakland. spent the next 8 days in and out of a fog of severe illness, in and out of the hospital. i made the bridal shower -- at a lovely home in oakland with terrace views of SF and the golden gate (it was really impressive to me), missed half the rehearsal dinner, and completely missed my brother's wedding. my two sister's, mother and aunt all took care of my children, as well as got me to the hospital and home, twice.
i LOVED california. and, am slowly recovering from what doctor's think is rocky mountain spotted fever or some other tick borne bacteria that IS responding to docycyline. it's slow going. probably contracted it here in newburyport.
thanks for all the wonderful advice, fodorite professionals of all stripes. not to worry, as not all children are at risk of death if they have the flu and don't go to a hospital! just the parent who was suffering from a tick borne disease needed to be hospitalized for days on end......until my next travel adventure (italy for christmas?), stay well. lots of love. corwin

May you sometime in the future look back and laugh at your trip to your brother's wedding. As in "Remember the time we went to Brother's wedding in California and everyone got sooo sick?" It's events like these that make for great family memories though they are awful at the time!

Gads corwin, what a terrible experience for you! I have wondered how you and the children were. I am glad that they recovered but you sound like you went through a lot of misery. Do take care of yourself, and dream of that trip to Italy!!

Wow--the nightmare trip for Corwin! I hope they videotaped the wedding!
Corwin, our son went out in our woods last fall and when he came back in he had many tiny dots on his legs. We thought it was dirt, but they couldn't be brushed off. Got tweezers, pulled one off and got out the magnifying glass. Deer tick nymphs--more than a hundred of them! He must have sat down where a deer had recently lain. DH immediately prescribed antibiotics or we would have had a very sorry story to tell.
Glad you're all recovered. You may laugh about this someday, but I doubt it!

your well wishes taken to heart. (emoticon here)
presently, i cope best if i just block it all out, including the part where my friend never showed to pick us up from the airport the day it was 98 degrees in boston/newburyport.
right now, i need to put this behind me. i am feeling better. maybe totally sympton free. i hope it is permanent. i am looking forward to that boringly healthy situation i so blissfully took for granted. i had my first local tomato of the summer today, by virtue of driving by the farm stand en route to my 2nd day on a new job. having an appetite to eat it was the highlight of my day. ymm.
my best to the excellent health of each and every one of you, dear travelers. stay well.
