Doubletree Suites Times Square price jump - anyone know why?

Hello,

We took a trip to NYC in 4/06 (the week before Easter) and stayed at Doubletree Suites on Times Square. Rooms at that time were $335/night. Well, I am heading back to NYC over 11/9 - 11/12/06, and the price of the rooms at this hotel have jumped to $500 per night. Does anyone know why???

Also, can anyone recommend another other hotels where 6 people could stay together in the same room?

Thanks so much,

Karen

I don't have any particular recommendations, but you could check out options on quikbook.com

It's not exactly a price jump - prices vary considerably day by day. November is an expensive month in NYC. It seems you've just picked a particularly bad time (or had a particularly good time on your last trip). If you can change the dates of your trip, you may find it to be quite a bit cheaper at another time.

Prices on NYC hotels continue to rise as tourists, especially those with the mighty pound which is almost 2 for 1 vs. the dollar, flock to NYC. Also true NOV is high priced.

The Salisbury is $473/night for a 1 bedroom suite. (on quikbook searching for a room with 3 adults and 3 kids) If you search for 2 adults and 2 kids, the price is less for a 1 bedroom. I also find a 1 bedroom suite at the San Carlos, a very nice hotel, but it says it's only for 4. I'd phone them.

Any of the Affinia hotels (all suites) should have rooms for 6. Closest one to Times Square is the Affinia Manhattan. Prices on quikbook are usually better than on affinia.com On the Affinia website, the Eastgate Tower and the Shelburne Murray Hill are the best prices for your dates.

If you don't mind staying downtown, the Embassy Suites is another option.

April is realatively low season. November is high season. I would expect price sin November to be much higher than in April - since everyone comes to NYC for the holidays - and when hotels know they're going to be full they don;t discout or make special offers.

For 6 people togeher in the same room your choices are quite limited - aot all suite hotels.

Check Affinia hotels (but only some rooms will take 6) check out the Embassy suites (ditto).

Must you put all 6 into the same room? You might have more options if you could divide up into 2 3s - or a 2 and a 4 - are we talking small children that can;t be left alone - or older kids/teens that will be fine on their own? (In that case you might try 2 rooms in the applecore group of budget hotels which get generally good reviews - perhaps connecting or adjacent rooms.)

Oh - and assuming it is cancellable I would definitely reserve the Doubletree now - you may not find anything better - and prices will only continue to rise.

Thanks for the responses so far. We will have 2 13 yr olds and 1 9 yr old, so kids really can't stay alone. We could do 2 adjoining rooms, though... what is the "applecore group of budget hotels?"

Applecore group is a bunch of budget hotels (Red Roof, La Quinta, Conmfort) in the city. I'm not suggesting that they can take 6 in a room - but perhaps 2 rooms at not bad prices.

IMHO - 13 year olds can stay by themselves - when we travled with my step daughters at 11 and 14 they always had their own room next to ours. (Nothing worse than sharing a bath with 2 teenagers constantly primping and doing hair and ...) And kids way younger than that go off to summer camps with their own rooms (and only counselors nearby - not parents).

Check www.hotels.com for your dates of travel so you get some idea of the rates being offered at lots of hotels.

I would also suggest the Affinia, and one of the nicest and easy to get around the city is on E 34th St between 3rd and Lexington Ave. It is close to shopping at Herald Square, lots of restaurants in the area and it close to subways and buses.

Have a great time.
