Was wondering if any of you fine folks have stayed at this hotel or if you have seen it? Wondering about the rooms as well as the area? They said the parking is free which is nice and the pics look good but youknow how looks can be deceiving.

The Doubletree hotel is not located in Del Mar but is a few miles inland from the center of town.
You may like the Hilton on Jimmy Durante road a bit better as it is located directly across the street from the racetrack and is closer to the beach. I believe the parking is free for guests.
The Doubletree is located in a safe area with restaurants nearby.
If you are primarily interested in the track or the beach then the Hilton is much closer,but still a mile from the beach.
I haven't stayed at either hotel so I can't compare their amenities.

don76 is right. This Doubletree is actually in San Diego in a suburb called Carmel Valley. It's in a business area, just off I-5, but not right next to the freeway. It's closer to Torrey Pines State Beach than Del Mar beach. There are a few restaurants in the immediate area, but you're not very far from all the restaurants in Del Mar or la Jolla.

Thanks for the info. that is a big help. I am traveling there for business so I don't need to be by the track or anything like that.

I just wanted if it was a safe/clean area and you answered my qurestions.

Yup, stayed there many times from '97 to this past Fall. The pool is cool - lagoon shaped. The brunch downstairs is good. Beware of anything hard to make on the room service menu. Had like a sliced rib-eye and gravy sandwich which very well have been dog food - Alpo. Rooms are clean, tv's an ok size, could be bigger. Carmel Valley is an upper class neighborhood. The hotel is very close to the highways, but I never noticed the noise. Also, its location just makes the cutoff line for bad North County traffic. These days my family and I like the Residence Inn in La Jolla. There's a reasonbable resort/spa hotel in Del Mar at the corner of the 101 and 14th St. that I hear is awesome, and it's right next to the Del Mar bars and restaurants and two blocks to main beach.

Well I guess your question has been answered, but I must add my two cents. The Doubletree is a relatively new hotel in a relatively newly built up area near the relatively new 56 freeway. If your room is high enough and on the right side, you may have a view of the ocean.

Relatively meaning in about the last twelve years. I moved to the area in the late 1980s, when the whole area east of I-5 was agricultural ranches, while west of I-5 was beach towns with condos. I saw the Doubletree go up, saw the 56 freeway being built, saw the Auberge being built. Glad to say, the area west of I-5 isn't very different than it was before, especially the relatively large Torrey Pines park complex is in place which is right over the freeway from the Doubletree, and a great place for light hiking along and above the beach, it's actually only about a mile from the Doubletree to the beach, right along the saltwater marsh part of Torrey Pines on Carmel Valley Road, easy to get to for a relaxing walk after your business meetings. You might find easy parking along the beach after dark, there was "no parking from 3AM to 4AM" when I lived there, basically meaning no overnight camping. Very safe area, with some suburban strip malls with (when I was there) a very good Greek gyros place about a mile north along El Camino Real and Del Mar Heights Road. It's not the Auberge, but it's more than a decent place for a business trip. The only problem might be the daily traffic jam just south of there where the I-805 and I-5 freeways merge.

I, too, give thumbs up for the Doubletree. It is indeed in a very corporate environment with nothing much worthwhile around it, but it offers quick access to almost anywhere in the S.D. area.
The free parking is a plus for me, too. I stayed there repeatedly and it always was fine - esp. at their rates which are still reasonable.
After the completion of the new freeway heading East, there is a minor noise issue at the otherwhise very nice pool IMHO, but the rooms are not affected.
Staff is friendly and helpful. Rooms are not new anymore, but very well maintained.
Overall in that price range it is onbe of the best offers in the area I should think.

Thanks again for all the additional information. It sounds to me like this place will be fine for my needs. I put in a bid on Price line and got it for $50 a night. So that is a GREAT price!

My vote would have been for
Auberge Del Mar.
If you return for pleasure give it a try. I had a wonderful stay, very refined with a breezy southern california attitude. Excellent service great location by the beach. 5 stars.

$50 is a terrific price for that hotel.
That is about a third the rack rate.
