Dothan, AL restaurants or nearby sights

I just finished my work in Tallahassee a day early, so I have a free day tomorrow and a desire to cross Alabama off my list of the only three states I have never visited (NDAK and SDAK are the others). I'm considering driving 100 miles each way for lunch in Dothan. Any restaurant suggestions or other things to do near there would be appreciated. Thanks.

Now that's not very nice -- as well as not being very funny -- I've seen you do better.

Conestoga's Steak House is very good and popular with the locals. A place called Mrs. Boomer's has been written up as having some of the best cheeseburgers around.

There are alot more than Applebee's restaurants in Dothan! That said, I would not drive 100 miles each way to go to any one of them (or any other city for that matter).

Here are some popular favs of people in the area:

Conestoga Steak ( closed at lunch, so you're out of luck ).

Old Mill (ditto about lunch).

Hunt's Steak & Oyster House - bingo! Opened for lunch. Also have an oyster bar adjacent. Easy to find because it's on the left at the Hwy 231 and Ross Clark Circle jct. I like the prime rib.

Kathy's Kountry Kitchen is popular with the southern food freaks.

There is a new Greek or Middle Eastern Bisto Restaurant downtown on the corner of Main and Foster St. They have music and belly dancing on various nights. Food was just 'OK' to me.

Just down Foster St. from there is a nice little sandwich shop...forget the name.

Grate Things on 231 N. and Westgate Parkway is good...they are famous for their catering (locally).

Mildred's Tea Room is one of my favs. Southern fare with a touch of class.
$10 buffet.

Just about ANY chain you want is here.

Chrystal River Seafood on Ross Clarke Circle is also good...if you don't compare to Wintzell's and the like nearer the Gulf.

My DH says the best hamburger in town is at the Oyster Bar on Reeves St. (Looks like a dump on the outside - I've never been).

The town is proud of their murals painted on buildings all around downtown.

Landmark Park is a nice rustic revival area with a good planetarium and marsh nature boardwalk. (431 N).

The Highland Trent-Jones golf trail is big business (84 W).

Chatahoochee St. Park...Oh, you don't have time for all this during lunch!

Anyway, have a good one!

You're welcome!
I don't know why this doesn't come up when I click on 'Alabama' on the list. You might get more response if it did.

Please let us know what you actually do and what you think of it.

hi olesouthernbelle

My trip is completed and Alabama is now on my "visited" list. I went to Hunt's and had a nice grouper filet. Plus good weather, so no complaints. I liked the retro look of the Dothan High School building. Thanks for your help.

Great. As someone who has been in all fifty, keep at it. South Dakota has some of the best parks, both national and state. You will really enjoy. We played golf in North Dakota on an overnight trip from Montana to pick up that state so I can't recommend much. Both are beautiful. Plan a summer trip and knock them off!

screenwriter2006: I'm glad you had nice weather for your visit.

Did you make it to downtown to see the murals?

Dothan is a nice town to live in...but, unless your child is in a baseball tournament or you are involved in golf heavily, it's not got alot of drawing cards for visitors.

Please be aware there are more interesting destinations in AL.
