Disneyworld and School Vacations
We are currently planning a visit to DisneyWorld in December 1999 but want to avoid the school vacation rush. As we're from Australia we don't know when schools take vacation around Christmas. Could anyone advise, thanks.

When we went to Disneyworld in l990 we heard that the best time to go and still see the ornaments and decorations is after Thanksgiving until about 1 1/2 weeks prior to December 25. We went for 4 days(21-25) and the first two days were perfect and then the crowds hit. I just wanted out of there! They open the park early for guests that stay at Disney properties but it only helps for an hour or so.

The first 2 1/2 weeks of December are the ideal time to visit Disney. It begins to get crowded after that; many parents take their kids out of school early at that time of year. Having been to Disney as many times as I have, I know what I am talking about. I've been there at that time of year when Disney has hit capacity and had to close parks to anymore visitors. Regarding early entry to the parks, each day, a different park opens an hour early for resort guests. Trust me, this makes a huge difference. In addition, a few evenings each month, the Magic Kingdom stays open for three hours after closing for resort guests to ride the most popular rides. However, these dates are not published well in advance.
Email me if you have any more questions about planning a trip to WDW. Since you are planning to visit in December, 1999, I hope you have already made your reservations (if you are staying at a WDW resort).

The schools are closed from approximately 12/23 through 1/3. Take a look at www.disney.com. They have a ton of information, including a peak season chart. They have the entire list of restaurants and their menu! I suggest you make your breakfast, lunch and dinner reservations in advance through their priority seating reservations.

My family of 5 was just there 12/18to 12/23. It was ok for about our first three days. After that it was a bit crowded but not unbelievably so. If you can go anytime between thanksgiving and christmas your chances will be good. There are also some great deals on Disney property resorts right now, like 79-135 per night. YOu will think you are in paradise if you stay on Disney. Good luck and have a great time.
