Discount Tickets in Times Square
Is the discount ticket tent in Times Square open on Sundays? Has anyone ever stood there for tickets? How long can I expect to wait? Much luck gettng the show you want? Anything else I should know about it? Is it worth planning a trip to NYC with the thought that we'll go there for tickets instead of getting them ahead of time? Thanks for any information you can give me about it.

Yes, it is open on Sundays, starting at 10 a.m., I believe. You can get tickets for Sunday matinees and the few off-Broadway shows that have Sunday evening performances.
Since we don't know what shows you want, we can't tell you if you'll be lucky. I can tell you that you will definitely NOT find The Producers, The Lion King or Mamma Mia available there. What shows are you looking for?
Incidentally, you can only get them there for the day of the performance. And on Wednesdays and Saturdays when there are two performances, you'll have to wait in line twice!
(Incidentally, it's not a tent, but a small structure.)
An alternative for discount tickets is to check out the Playbill website (www.playbill.com). Join its club. (It's free and not a gimmick). Then, you're eligible to take advantage of its discount tickets offers. In this case, you can order them by phone in advance or can take a copy of the offer to each theater's box office when you get to the city and buy them in advance.

You can go to the TKTS location located in front of the American Indian Musuem near Battery Park. It opens three hours earlier than TKTS in Time Square and the temperature is cooler w/ shadow from the museum. I was there two weeks ago. Tickets were available for many shows including Chicago, Rent, Les Miserables, The Goat, Metamorphosis, Mornings at Seven, Thoroughly Modern Millie, Cabaret, and Noices Off.

Just about the best information I've gotten from this board regards TKTS. Go to www.citysearch.com. Click on New York and then the "Arts" bar at the top of the screen. You will get as much information as you need, including what was available the day before.
There's no guarantee, of course, that what was available yesterday will be "on the board" today," but you'll be able to set your priorities. "Thoroughly Modern Millie," for example, was widely available before the Tony's and since it's a huge theatre, will probably be availiable in the near future.
Don't be discouraged by the length of the lines at the Times Square location. It looks daunting, but moves very quickly. Just have your top three choices made before you get to the window.
