I will be in Maine the week of August 8-12. We will be staying at Moody Beach and looking at visiting the following areas: Kittery, Ogunquit, Kennebunkport, Portland, and Acadia National Park. Am looking for advice as to places to eat in these areas.

Ogunquit: Expensive-"Arrows"
less, their new "MC perkins Cove" American bistro cuisine.
In Kittery, "The Lobster Pound at Chauncy Creek" bring your own beer and wine. Down a ramp and eat at wooden tables beside the creek.

In Portland: Street and Co. or Fore Street. My absolute favorite Portland restaurant is Hugo's, but I'm not sure what type of food you're looking for. The chef is fairly adventurous, so if you're looking for your basic Maine boiled lobster, I wouldn't recommend it. I tried cod's tongue there for the first time (very good) and my DH was practically in heaven eating his foie gras creme brulee (I know it sounds gross, but he loved it)! Everything on the menu--we had 5 or 6 courses--was excellent, and we're looking forward to going back this year.

In Kennebunkport, Windows on the Water is wonderful, and "come as you are"...you can dress up or down. Their Lobster Ravioli is unbelievable. The White Barn Inn is terrific also, but pricey and more formal. If you want to catch some good clam chowder, a pint, and a fun view, Federal Jack's is fun and casual, and you can bring the kids if you have any.

Totally agree about Chauncey Creek. I wouldn't travel to Kittery without venturing there. It's fun, cheap, and very much Maine!

I live in Portland and eat out a lot. Everone I know loves Fore Street and Street and Company (same owner) but I think they are somewhat overrated. I don't think you would be disapointed at either but they are both very noisy and not at all relaxing. Other excelent choices in Portland in the same price range (somewhat expensive but not extreme) are Back Bay Grill and Cinque Terre (fancy Italian). I am not sure how to describe Back Bay Grill, European I guess. I got advice from folks on this bulletin board recently about another place in Ogunquit, a wonderful French resturant called 98Provence.

In Ogunquit good choices are Poor Richard's Tavern, Gypsy Sweetheart, Five-O, and Provence. MC Bistro and Arrows are too expensive for what you get.
The best in Kennebunkport is Hurricane.

Since your'e staying at Moody Beach, Billy's Chowder House for lunch. Wonderful seafood chowder and lobster rolls.

How are you planning on Acadia if you're staying at Moody Beach? Are you driving to Acadia for a couple of nights? Just wondering, because when my husband and I first visited Maine the distance between southern Maine to Acadia took a lot longer than the Map appeared it would.

You mentioned driving to Bar Harbor. We are planning on driving from Portland to Bar Harbor via RT-1 to stop at some towns along the way. How long would that take? What would you recommend??
