The only logical route is straight up I-5.

However, if you have time we like the drive over Snoqualmie Pass (I-90), to Yakima (I-82), over the Simcoe Mountains (I-87) to Goldendale and Maryhill, and then west to Portland on WA-14 as far as Hood River and then on I-84. This is a scenic drive--but it is long.

You could also go over to the coast and drive up cutting back to Seattle either through Olympia or going on around the Olymic Peninsula and then take a ferry across. Also long.

Sorry - I missed the direction of travel. Reverse that.

I always just drive on the I-5 freeway; it's exactly 3 hours Portland to Seattle. You have to go quite a bit out of your way, before it gets "scenic".

I recently drove down "5"fron Seattle to Olympia and then over to Aberdeen, to 101 and down to Astoria, then along Columbia river to Portland..Yes it is a little longer but at least "different" Please note there are TWO diferent routes for 101 in Washington...one on the "coastal" side and one directly north out of Olympia
Also, locals told me to try to avoid "5" on Friday afternoons--well I didn't listen--30 MPH almost from SeaTac to Olympia..

It's really a loop, not two different routes, traveler24. You just have to chosse whether to go clockwise or counterclockwise.
