Detroit hotels and NAIAS...
Auto Show time is here again, and I am going to be in Detroit Jan 18-20th. I am considering staying at the Mariott Rennaissance Center. Is this a nice place? Is it convenient to late night restaurants and other places? Would I be better off staying in the suburbs? I know it's on the People Mover. I would like any opinions of those who have stayed there. Thanks.

Scott, for sheer convenience the Marriott would be a great choice. Don't mess around with staying in the suburbs. You can walk to Cobo Center (.5 mile away if that) if you stay at the Marriott. I've only been there once, and it was my wedding night, but they've had a complete re-do since then. Enjoy the auto show!

Het Scott:
Personally, having lived in Notown for WAY too many years, I'd rather stay @ some Holiday Inn Express in the 'burbs & drive into downtown. You're gonna have 2 pay 4 parking anyway. Get yerself 1 near the expressways & hit the throttle, as we drive max fast here. Food & drink is really cheap in Detroit if u stay out of the downtown, touristy, areas. Warren or Sterling Heights r good examples & u can get downtown, other than in factory closing times, in 20 minutes. See you @ The Auto Show!

Hi Scott - I live in the Detroit area. My recommendations would be:
If staying for the auto show for only a couple of days, stay nowhere else but the Mariott Rennaissance Center.
If coming for 5-days, 1 week, etc. Get outta' town. I strongly suggest staying in the neighboring cities of Southfield or Farmington Hills. Both cities have great lodging, with Southfield having a terrific Westin.
Enjoy the auto show. This year's event looks better than most. This is, after all, the largest auto-show in the world. The crowds are expected to be in record numbers this year due, in part, to the great weather we are experiencing. Check out GM's fuel cell car (no engine). I will be attending this week, and to tell you the truth, I am not a huge car-buff. But this show looks excellent!
Happy Trails,
Paul

Scott here, just wondering what there is to do on Sunday. To recap, staying at the Mariott Ren Ctr., which is on the Peoplemover train. Any suggestions as to what to do? Am I right in asuming the Greektown Casino is directly accessable by the train?
Any other suggestions? Saturday I will be going to NAIAS, but Sunday is wide open. Will be driving back to Canton, OH late sun.

All went well, except for a minor problem with the price of Sunday Brunch at the Mariott Ren Cen. Also, my suggestion would be to wait until the rennovation of the Ren Ctr. is completed before you stay at the Mariott hotel. It was not easy to get around through the Ren Ctr. building. The 72nd floor restaurant was closed for remodeling. There was no pool and the 40th floor spa was not open during evening hours.
