We're thinking of going to Michigan for a little R&R over the 4th. Any thoughts on where to focus our attention? We're thinking of somewhere near lake michigan, although not necessarily on the lake. We live in Chicago, so we'll be driving. Any thoughts on a city or region?

Petoskey, Harbor Springs areas are very nice as is Saugatuck. Do a text search and you will find tons of info.

South Haven is also a nice town for a weekend trip. Probably more family oriented than Saugatuck. Both towns are not far from one another so you might be able to do both. We are actually renting a home between both towns for the weekend.

I also live in chicago and grew up in michigan. recently i have spent a lot of time in the lakeside/union pier area. while convenient and very nice it just gets better as you drive north. i would recommend trying to go to the lelenau peninsula (glen arbor, leland, northport). great area and super relaxing. good luck finding a place to stay this late in the game. the fourth is a huge weekend up north! good luck and keep driving - you won't be dissappointed!
