Denver in April

My wife and I will be in Denver the last half of April for a conference. Considering coming a little early to spend a couple days in Breckenridge (or somewhere outside the city). What can I expect the weather to be like that time of year? Will the roads in the higher elevations still be closed?

Sorry, but that is almost an impossible question to answer. The saying here is "if you don't like the weather, wait a minute." It could be in the 70's with glorious sunshine or in the 30's with snow. In the mountains you are not likely to have very warm weather in April. Make sure you bring sweaters and sweatshirts so you can drop layers if you need to. In the mountain resort areas the roads should be okay although if there is heavy snow they close.

Unpredictable for sure but if you are only going to Breck I don't think you'll likely run into road closings. If you want to do Independence Pass... no way.

That's pretty much it. You can golf in your shorts or shovel snow out of your driveway. AND, the situation can change within a day! Don't count on high passes being open. Boulder is a very pretty place to spend a couple of days, and perhaps not subject to some of the weather the mountain towns might get.

hi, breck should probably have some good spring skiing this april. araphoe basin will for sure.
when you ask about the roads i assume you mean the high passes as opposed to the regular roads, which only close for a couple hours until plows can run through. the high passes will not be open in april! (mt. evans, independence, trail ridge road and all the jeep passes)

Our weather so far this winter has been bizarre...you can expect it to be even more so in April, typically our most unpredictable month of the year. You can literally count on nothing...from 70's in the mountains to a closed Eisenhower tunnel (at the continental divide, preventing travel to Vail, Breck, etc).

A closed Eisenhower Tunnel is a very rare event - usually related to an accident. The interstate is plowed to keep traffic flowing. As mentioned above, only the high mountain passes can be considered closed in the winter. Breckenridge is an easy drive.

Again the weather can be all over the place. Denver has been dry and warm for about a month. I'm waiting for the big snowstorm this spring.
