I make the drive to Kansas City and back to Denver all the time. It's a pretty easy drive and not a big deal to drive another 20 - 25 for a better hotel location whether downtown or along the light rail. Plus I'd rather be in a good location and not need to drive back to the airport which makes no sense.

Y'all have beaten up on my idea plenty. I didn't mean AT the airport, I meant off I-70 in the vicinity of Airport Blvd.
I'm apparently different than most, because I don't like road trips, and would be desperate to get out of the car as soon as I hit civilization. Which is why I suggested that you stop, get refreshed, then decide where to go next.
It's what I would do.

Also, my suggestion would meet the OP's budget: "hotel w/in the $85-$150 price range."
It would be more helpful for posters to make their own suggestions of specific hotels, rather than just continue to bash my idea.

I just looked on hotels.com for hotels in Denver. There was a downtown hotel for $116.
This one is in the south Denver I recommended as being able to get cheap rates often for $85
We don't know what day he is arriving. Hotels at the airport (OR nearby) can be expensive also.
He also might be led to be "near the airport" on places like Peoria which are the PITS.
YOur idea is to be 'way outside of Denver proper and not much fun for a one night stay.

....rather than just continue to bash my idea......
Who is doing the bashing? You offered the suggestion of the airport hotels. A number of posters disagreed with valid suggestions. And you return six time to bash their disagreement with you because no one praised your recommendation. That is 25% of the responses.
...Ask them about access to public transit to downtown Denver....
None of the airport hotels have any access to public transit to downtown.
