Delta caused my husband much heartburn a couple of weeks ago. He called to book a first class flight from lax to nyc and told the agent he was going use American Express miles to pay. The agent suggested that he was a Silver Medallion member and could use some upgrade coupons he had. My husband asked several times how easy it would be to upgrade because it wanted to be sure to get the seat. The guy told him to call 24 hours in advance and confirm. He called back a few days later to confirm what he was told and a second Delta employee verified. He called the night before and was told it was 20 minutes too early to call but everything was set to go. He called back about 30 min later and that agent said the coupons expired 2 days earlier so "too bad". After waiting for a supervisor for 45 minutes on one call and 30 minutes on another call he gave up. He finally was able to buy a 1st class upgrade after standing at the ticket counter talking to a supervisor for almost an hour.

It seems everyone has a horror story for an airline - mine is also Delta. We flew Delta from DC to Alaska via Atlanta and St. Lake City. When we got to Atlanta the boards showed our flight was delayed. I asked if we could change to another Delta flight that was scheduled on time - NO. We then sit on our plane for over an hour before take-off. Needless to stay we get to St. Lake City about the time our flight to Alaska is ready to take off. We were with a ticket agent for over 2 hours trying to get to Alaska. SInce there were 5 of us I was willing to do combos of 2-2-1 or 3-2. The real kicker was when the ticket agent said that we could fly in the morning to Seattle then to Alaska but Delta didn't have an agreement with SW so we'd have to pay $125 each to fly from Salt Lake to Seattle. Can you imagine that he even suggested this? Needless to say - we didn't pay. It ended up taking us 31 hours to get to Alaska. I never fly Delta for vacations and try to avoid them for business trips.

For all the talk about how great it is to use miles, it seems that Delta never has anything available and if they do it is for a red eye, which of course their is no service. I think Delta's skymiles program is shameless for this practice. Do you all agree?

I agree. Sky Miles has only been frustrating for me to use. The only time trying to cash in miles with no hassle on the othewr end was post-9/11 when they were offering seats for 15k miles on an as need basis.

They also push their credit card program way to aggressivly for what they offer. Very mis-leading. I get a offer for 10,000 free miles every week. Of course, the fine print is for first time card members only, but I'm sure plenty of people fall for it.
