Deciding whether to stay in Miami beach or Keys for spring break.
We booked flights to Miami for Easter week and need some advice fast.We are trying to decide whether we should stay in Miami vicinity, on a beach or Key West.We are traveling with our 12 yr old daughter, so I think we would avoid the South Beach area. We are just looking for warm sunshine,a great pool and nice beach. We just want some R&R and things to do in walking distance or a short drive. We are physically active and like outdoor activities, bikes, water sports, mopeds, etc. Here is the real challenge we are on a budget, would like to keep it 200 or less per night. Thanks for any help, we are pressed for time.

I was just to Key West.... the beaches aren't as good as you'll find in the Miami area. In addition, Key West is a very "alternative" scene. Not that your 12-year old can't handle it, but some prefer a little more shelter. With that said, there is nothing like getting away from the bustle of Miami for the more relaxed "but still a little crazy" scene of the Keys.
Have you looked into Ft. Lauderdale? Lots of good beaches, and I think it would also fit your price range. It is basically part of Miami.

You might want to split the trip up and stay in the Keys (Islamorada or one of the other keys) for a few days and do some snorkeling, fishing, etc. And then spend the rest of the trip in Miami and enjoy the nice beaches. You just need to get busy on your hotel reservations...QUICK! Fort Lauderdale hotel rooms are almost non-existent on Priceline for March & April.

For the vacation you suggest I would recommend the keys over Miami. Might be tough at this point finding lodging as it is common for the keys to COMPLETELY book up this time of year, even the little shack hotels. And there are plenty of nice beaches in the keys, it just takes a little looking. There is a great public beach on Marathon, sombrero, recently renovated, very clean. I wish you luck.
