DC Area Attractions
I am taking my 17 daughter to DC for spring break and we have decided to venture away from the city for a day or two.
She is interested in civil war sites and I am looking for a colonial history site.
Any suggestions?

Either in or within an hour (depending on traffic) of DC:
Mount Vernon, Woodlawn Plantation, Arlington Mansion (aka Lee-Custis), Stratford Hall Plantation, Manassas Battlefield, Fredericksburg, Chandellorsville, Spotsylvania, Appomatix.
If you're willing to travel to Richmond and/or Petersburg you can add National Museum of the Civil War Soldier, Confederate Museum and White House.

Is Gettysburg to far for you? Easy drive from DC, about 2-2 1/2 hours. There are some very nice inns to stay at for the night. We did the Gettysburg Ghost walk (at night) which was enjoyable.
Antietam Battlefield is another good spot.

Check out the C&O Canal, starts out of Georgetown and goes up through VA and MD, may areas you would like to visit.

Alicia mentions the C&O Canal.
We've ridden our bikes down from Harper's Ferry to DC a couple of times
and next year plan on riding all the way down from Cumberland to DC as a part of someone's 50th "birthyear" celebration. ;-)
If you and your daughter like to bike ride and the weather is OK in the spring, rent some bikes in GeoTown and get on the C&O Canal and ride up to the Great Falls of the Potomac. About a 10-12 mile, one way ride.
Nice ride and the park there is beautiful. Lock your bikes and walk out on the walkway for some great photo ops especially if the kyackers are out there.
And watch out for turtles on the path!

Great Falls is spectacular! Definetely worth the visit. Link to pictures of the waterfall and park.
